From what i've read, Verbatim appears to be the most reliable. I've been using them for a while and i'd have to agree personally.

Verbatim are excellence. any disks that use purple RITEK DYE are quality as that is the best dye. Many top brands use it.

So is it better not to use DVD+R format for backups and recovery disks?

Brands don't make there own disks. Several brands can come from one factory as there's only a handful mainly in Taiwan. A way to find out the real quality is find out the media id with a utility.
