It seems that Qwik-Fix and PrevX 2.0 are incompatible, at least on my computer.

If I have to choose between the two, which is preferable (I'm using Win XP Pro SP1) - or would it be better to use Qwik-Fix with SSM, substituting this program for PrevX?

SSM is not strictly a total substitute for Qwik-Fix since it does not monitor the critical file systems unlike Prevx. SSM handles the starting of processes, process spawning, memory injection and the like. There is some overlap in function between SSM and Prevx in that they both monitor reg-run keys.

Personally I would say use PrevX instead of Qwifix if

    a) Your primary browser is not IE or a IE based wrapper
    b) You already have XP SP 2
    c) You use some kind of local web proxy software like proxomitron to filter threats
