VAIO Quick Web Access has been residing on my HDD for the last 7 or 8 months, yet I wasn't bothered to use it even once...till it struck me.

I have had so many problems with making linux distros connect my ISP [i.e. GlobalForce's had many problems with me wink] I decided to turn it on finally and I'm pleasantly surprised.
First off - my connection works! Truly unbelievable!

My primary goal - online banking; so it will be used like once a week / 30 minutes a week

Tell me please [cause there isn't enough info in English] your viewpoints, experiences regarding this application. It's pretty urgent.

    [MOVE]as always - appreciated![/MOVE]

might want to read these very short articles:

I have Splashtop on my Lenovo S12. It's called "Lenovo Quick-Start" but ironically, (due to the name), the splash screen still says "Splashtop." I have a friend who later got an S12 and they changed it, same thing of course, but they finally have the splash screen rebranded correctly.

It's very quick startup and I like that. But I don't use it. There's no way to configure the thing! It's "as-is" or I have missed something. I wish I could tell you more, but I sure won't use something I don't have control over. What's it storing? What's it doing when....you get the idea.....I just like to know what's going on.

Hey guys, I work for DeviceVM, who makes Splashtop. A few comments on the thread:

    • On both Lenovo and Sony systems Splashtop resides on the hard drive, not the flash memory.
    • Splashtop does store persistent browser data (cookies, bookmarks, history, etc), but does not allow arbitrary writes to the hard drive (so, no unwanted software can be installed). You can clear persistent data or restore Splashtop to factory state with a few clicks if needed, wiping it totally clean.
    • Upgrades are pushed by the OEM. You may also be able to upgrade Splashtop yourself by downloading a new version from the OEM support site.

Since Splashtop uses a slimmed down Linux stack with Firefox, and further restricts HDD access, it is a lot more secure than Windows. However, we do not comment on security details beyond this.

@LockBox: Yes, the version shipped on S12 was not user customizable, "as is". Since then, Lenovo has moved to Splashtop 2.0 which is customizable. As far as I know, they have not so far released an upgrade for S12 systems to move to the S2.0 version.

Unbelievable - Sergei, did you trace me up here mate?

    j/k

Spent quite a lot of time trying to get info on Splashtop which gave me a notion no one knows what it is...

So... how to clear the history? Just hit the button that says 'clear the history' and it;s definitely DONE?

@korben: Yeah, the power of Google alerts :)

Yes, once you do a 'clear private data' from the browser and shut down Splashtop, the data is permanently gone (note that shut down is important due to the way we handle persistent data storage). I believe all of the product versions for different OEMs have the 'clear private data', which is basically a standard Mozilla feature.

DeviceVM never replied to my email [bad boys] but having you here is much better!

Sergei, I'm thankful for your input.

3] I think I was presented with more WiFi options on 1st run and I think I misconfigured... is there a ways to reset the setting and be presented with the same welcome screen? or where are they hidden?

cause I can easily join the net wired, can't wireless although it says: connected

    //more to come

The WiFi options in the network manager are actually the same that you have when first configuring Splashtop (you can get to the network manager either by clicking on the network icon in the dock, or from the Config panel).

Anyway, to totally reset all of the settings, and repeat the initial out-of-the-box config steps, you can go to the Configuration panel, and do a "Restore to factory configuration" - I believe that button is under 'General' settings. It will erase all the network configurations, bookmarks, etc, and will restart the product as if you use it for the first time.

I hope this fixes the problem. There have been a couple WiFi router issues reported in our forums (http://splashtop.uservoice.com/forums/23135-lenovo), but they are fairly rare...

    sergei, thanks again!

Anyway, I had to restore my system image and with this came fresh Splashtop and... I managed to configure wifi effortlessly, which is nice ;)

//My version seems oldish, it's 1.1.2.4 - how about the update procedure?

    JonnyCasino linked me to this:

    h ttp://www.megaupload.com/?d=0C2CZAVT

    I also found these:

    h ttp://download.sony-asia.com.edgesuite.net/vaio/downloads/405469/EP0000226682.exe
    f tp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/VAIO/Updates/EP0000207216.exe

But...as lil bird put it - behind every update lurks unhappiness..

Ok, he didn;t say that! He said sth similar to prove updates aren;t always necessary and can bring less good than originally promised. So... I left mine untouched. The links haven't been tested so be careful what you;re doing, mate!

    Killer, your choice? ;)

@Killer: is the update notice you get within Windows or within Splashtop while its running? (I am guessing it is within Sony's own Windows updater, but please confirm)

sergei, on our behalf - could you verify which updateis THE one weshould consider usingwhen need arises?

Our machines are almost identical and I'm convinced Killer uses updates manager that has notified him of possible updates but that's to be verified...if he comes back

Yeah, maybe easier to use this UK version of the page - in English:

    h ttp://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VGN-NW21MF_S

1.1.4.3 has been out for a while, but appears to be the latest Sony has made available.
