While installing SpywareBlaster this am, some type of music video webpage took over my entire screen and had very difficult type getting rid of it and getting my desktop back!First thought was that SpywareBlaster may have been a spyware itself or a virus!
I started on Spybot last week and frankly, feel that I've had more popups and more spam then before.
I would really like to donate $ and support worthy causes but so far I'm glad these trials are free.
Can someone fill me on on these (general) issues? o_O :(

Hi DRay - did you download from the following site?

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Neither SpyBot nor SpywareBlaster should plague you with pop ups, etc. When you downloaded spywareblaster, did you check for updates and then be sure that you clicked "check all" and then click on "protect against checked items". Now search for updates for Spybot and if there are any, download them and then do a scan of your computer & see what it finds and report back here.

    Hi DRay,

Please feel free to send to me via email the SpywareBlaster installation file you used that you believe may caused this problem (my email address is available in my profile). Also, please let me know exactly where you downloaded it from, so that it can be checked out. In many hundreds of thousands of downloads and installations, no one has ever point to a virus (or other malware) related incident. So, I am highly interested in what you've seen.

    Thanks,
    LowWaterMark

    Peaches4u,
I did use that site. I found lots of problems to fix when I scanned with skybot and "checked all".I haven't updated spybot yet but did update spywareblaster just now. There is one file that keeps coming up on spywareblaster that it can't remove until rebooted but it seems to always come up after for problems.

Can you explain this a little more please? SpywareBlaster doesn't scan for files, so what file exactly "keeps coming up on spywareblaster" and what is telling you that your system needs to be rebooted?

The more I read through this, the more I think you may have pre-existing spyware on your system that may need to be manually removed if Spybot isn't finding it.

In order for us to better understand what's happening on your system, we need more information about what's running there and if any spyware is imbedded in your system startup locations. The utility HijackThis produces a log of all startups and can help the experts here identify most spyware items.

If you'll post that entire log here (just copy the log from the notepad window and paste the contents right in the message box of your next post here) I'm sure someone will help to analyze it.

Yes, that's what we're looking for DRay, thanks!

It may take a little while for the experts to stop by and review this log, so, keep checking back and we'll see if they find anything.

I've moved this thread, at least temporarily, to the Privacy Problems forum section where it can get the most attention.

Edit: I reverse my statement of no spyware. I googled the btlink and btiein.dll BHOs and found it was part of HuntBar, a spyware IE toolbar. Use Spybot Search & Destroy to eliminate it. Be sure you have the latest definitions, and to update and protect SpywareBlaster regularly as well to avoid getting this scum on your PC!

    ---

I looked through the log. No spyware there! www.clover.net, the home page, is an ISP, nothing special there. I looked at Downloaded Program Files and only legit. stuff there too. My only suggestion is to run a spybot scan. If you are getting popups when browsing, get the Google Toolbar 2.0 (http://toolbar.google.com), go into Options, and make sure the popup blocker is enabled (if it isn't already), as well as making your own customizations.

    Thanks for looking memodude.

I'd still like more information on this statement (file name? how it is seen exactly?) Perhaps attaching a screen image of it (alert? popup?) would help us to better understand what you are seeing.

    LowWaterMark,
The file that spybot can't seem to remove is BDE Projector: Program Directory C:/Windows/BDE. It gives message that it can remove it after rebooting since it is currently in use. The URL for this (BDE) is www.brilliantdigital.com which is apparently some type of 3D program?
Spybot has been updated and it is not finding any other spyware on my system on the last few scans except for the above.

That's good information DRay, thanks. I'm thinking Pieter may be able to advise you more on that now that we know what it is.

Do follow Pieter's advise in the post just above yours and fix and delete those items the way he says. Those are spyware related items.

After fully fixing, rebooting and deleting the files noted, you should run HijackThis again and post a new log so we can see if it's all cleaned out.

Here is some info on BDE:
    http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/BDE.html
    including removal instructions.

Warning! If it came in a bundle, the software that it came with, may stop to function.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Hope this is right again? I did run into error while fixing with HighjackThis but I think I got the files deleted.

    Pieter and LWM,
Thanks for the expertise and help! I have to say I'm very impressed with this site and the responses.
To digress only slightly, in the second part of my original post I was explaining my concerns about these programs (antispyware) in general terms. I am one to support volunteers in worthy causes and would gladly donate $ to support such sites as Spybot and SpywareBlaster if I'm sure about them. Because I'm new to the computer world and don't fully understand all this, how do I know they are helping me. I have seen the files that were "fixed" by spybot but how does that translate into something tangible that I can see or measure or understand?
Did'nt mean to be wordy and hope this isn't wrong thread to post this one on.

Spyware can often slow internet connections down by sending and receving unwanted info. They can often hijack pages which causes annoyance and involves time to fix, and as the saying goes time is money.
