    My system config:

    Intel i7 2600K
    Biostar TZ77A
    Toshiba 128GB SSD
    WD 500GB SATA HD
    8 x 2 DDR3 1600
    Windows 8.1

Paragon Backup Recovery 2013 installation and backup were good. Right after backing up my system, I did recovery to try the recovery function. The system could not boot after recovery. Windows 8.1 installation disc could not repair it. I ended up with re-installing Win8.1 and all apps.

I checked backup folder. There were more than one image file in the folder. The largest file extension is .000. Non of these files can be clicked to open. I didn't see any error message when I backup the system. What's wrong?

What do you backup, the entire disk or some partition(s)?
Not all of these files is a images.
They can be properly opened only from the Paragon software.

    I backup whole hard drive.

I used bootable CD to boot, then select Update MBR (I don't know if this is an option to restore MBR). It didn't work.

Which drive is the first in the boot order in the BIOS, SSD?
On the WD 500GB drive has OS's or MSR partition?
How have you tried to repair with the Windows 8.1 installation disk, bootrec / rebuildbcd?
I suspect when you restore disk, Paragon incorrectly edit bcd-file.

DVD drive is the first in boot list. SSD is the 2nd. OS is installed on SSD. 500GB HD is just a data disc, no OS on it and backup image is on that disc.

I boot with win 8.1 installation disc. Instead of install windows, I selected repair. Win 8.1 found problem but said it could not repair.

That's very interesting. Six months ago, I restored from backup Windows 8.0, all turned out well.
Maybe you ask Paragon Support why does not work boot? They will answer, is that the toll-free product are not on the same day, but will respond. And share the information, and I have now also 8.1, have not tried to recover.

I tried to restore the Windows 8.1, in roughly the same configuration of the PC, HD0 - MBR SSD 128GB, backup the entire disk, and successfully. Only the boot menu contained 1 entry, instead of 3 it was. Create a backup using the BR12 compact, restored by HDM 12 WinPE.

Boot with Paragon Rescue disc, I can see there are 2 partitions on the disc: C Primary 350MB System Reserved, Active YES. D Primary 119GB Win8.1 Active NO. The last step in Restore Wiz shows before restore drive letter is D, after restore the drive letter is *. If I start restore process, computer will not boot after restore.

I have exactly the same partitions (drive letters did not look, they aren't important), but everything works well and btw isn't lost Windows activation.
Now (53 minutes remaining, slow internet) i download and try to do this with the BR13 free rescue iso.

I can not find BR13 free rescue iso. I can find Rescue kit 11 which is the same one I used.

    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/

Mine is created from Paragon backup recovery 2013.

I try restore again and get same problem. I use Windows 7 Pro installation disc to repair (Start up). It works after repair. Actually I had same problem with other backup software before. I used Win7pro to repair.

I don't understand. RK11pro restored the backup created BR2013free, normal boot, and with the menu entries which disappeared in the recovery with programs of 12-13 series.

I've found a better backup restore software. Its backup is very fast and restore is simple and dependable. And include all features I needed. I have to say goodby to Paragon.

I'm glad for you. Please tell the name of the program to direct other people who have difficulties.

It's funny, but I got the opposite has happened.
I downloaded AOMEI Backupper (1.6 for Win 7, 20MB) installed on hd1 (wd-1000, Win 7 x64), created a backup of hd0 (SSD 128GB, Win 8.1), restored, rebooted, the menu there, choosed the 8.1 and got bsod (error 0xc0000225).
    ===========
Adjusted BCD from Win7 OS and then w8.1 booted normally.
