    Hi,

Thanks for the info but I don't appear to be finding any of the glitches you have indicated in your posts. Privatefirewall is running very smooth here.

I've switched from using Defense+ for many years and the prompts are fairly easy to manage. Everything is turned up to max, system anomaly is off and the "trusted publisher" list has been deleted and the feature disabled. This makes Privatefirewall quite chatty but also very configurable.

I think it is hard to advise on these types of software as there are many different settings that impact on how it runs for individual users but it is good to read other user's observations as above.

Do I understand correctly, then, that PrivateFirewall does not stealth ports?

Some people say so. I've been using PFW for 2+ years, and have tested it with Shields Up 3-4 times during that period, and have never failed a stealth test.

A few more Private Firewall questions. . .

    1) Does it protect against both inbound and outbound traffic?
    2) Does it include self-protection?
    3) Does it offer password protection to prevent tampering?
    4) How do you uninstall it (should that be necessary)?

    YES.
I believe so but I never tested it.
Not that I am aware off.
With great difficulty. It does not uninstall clean. I just found part of it a couple of days ago in WIN 7 scheduled tasks and I uninstalled it months ago and manually scrubed my HDD and registry of remanents of it.

From that HardwareAnalysis link provided, appears your blue screen is NIC related.

You can try to contact the PF developer via Support on the PF web site for a resolution. I would say that if PF and your NIC conflict, look elsewhere for another firewall.

If you check the numerous other threads in Wilders on PF, you will observe the blue screens after installing PF are not all that uncommon.

    Per the PF web site:

    Installation Issues

    General Install errors - 0x80870002, 0x8084a02b, 0X808f0203, etc.

Installation issues that idicate general install error codes like or similar to the ones above are often difficult to trouble-shoot. Errors of this kind are typically associated with a problem with the registry and could have been introduced in a variety of ways (i.e. an outcome of a previously installed firewall, Internet security suite, hips or av, virus infection, etc.).

One appraoch to try and resolve is:

    1) Uninstall Privatefirewall (if it was installed on any level),
    2) Review the system (program files, registry) for any remnants from previously installed HIPS or firewall products. If found, remove.
    3) Temporarily uninstall whatever Antivirus software will be used on the system.
    4) Reboot the system.
    5) Reinstall Privatefirewall. If the install is successful and Privatefirewall appears to be funtioning as expected, add back the anti-virus software.

I had that problem with Avast after updating from 7.0.1466 to .1474. After talking with Greg over at Privacyware, we tried a few things, none of which solved the problem. I ended up switching to AVG on that pc. I would add that I never had a problem with PF with any AVs I'd used with it until avast 7.

Interesting. Avast removal tool worked exceptionally well for me on XP.
