    Yes and no.

Portable Tor is just Tor on a USB stick, like xB Browser or Opera Tor, but without the browser integration.

Tor exposes you to malicious exit node injection and exit node snooping. But it gives you encryption and ok anonymity.

The result is that the wifi hotspot won't be able to snoop on you, but now any participant in the tor network can snoop on you, and may inject malicious code that could do anything to your computer like secretly installing rootkits. Out of the fat and into the fire.

If you're going to go the Tor direction, the Tor Project actually has a Tor browser for download that is portable...just unzip the file onto your USB drive and away you go. The Tor people are actually very down on OperaTOR saying they've never been in contact with them and don't make the source code available. They say TOR Portable is ok but recommend using their own portable software located at http://www.torproject.org/torbrowser/
