What's a lot more annoying about this is that it's not just porn sites that will end up being banned but anything the govt deems inappropriate.

Or more likely, sites that question the actions of the government or that give public information that the government is trying to keep away from public ?

No. The UK Prime Minister is blocking porn by default as he's worried about younger people/children accessing it and this has extended to other websites that are deemed as inappropriate. Some of this is stuff that I think that should banned because it is quite harmful but to me this feels like the start of the UK govt clamping down on what people can look at online and that it's only going to get worse. The sad thing is that it won't stop criminal activity and I'm pretty sure it that people who want to get around filters will do with ease and that young people are going to still be looking at porn.

    You can choose? Wow :p

Anyway, censorship discussion aside, I agree with this:

"possession of online pornography depicting rape would be made illegal"

That should have been done ages ago.

Totally agree with you on that one. I also find the degradation of women that seems so popular in modern poor just deeply saddening.

I also agree that their is a problem with crime online and all govt at are going to have to deal with it at one time or other but I'm just not sure it's the right way. I really resent the idea that if the filters block me from accessing a website that I use that I'll be forced to opt into a porn list. There will probably be stigma attached to it as well. Thank goodness for VPNs.

They need to keep the trash off the web but for the misuse of the blocking that would have me worried

Will this include the older Bond films?

I would much rather have someone acting out their fantasies at home than doing it in real life. If they want to get freaky in the privacy of their own homes then so be it.

As far as children getting access to this kind of stuff. How about being leaving that up to the parents.

These censorship and monitoring trends are extremely disturbing in countries that are supposed to have freedoms. The bad thing is it isn't completely about security. It is about CONTROL.

This is going to be tricky. Governments will take advantage of any powers they accrue from this if it becomes legislation. If the ISPs agree to block porn websites then hopefully that will keep very restrictive legislation at bay. I do not care if adults access porn, but kids end up on porn sites, sometimes intentionally but also unintentionally.

At this time parents and schools have the responsibility of blocking access to these sites on their computers and smart phones, but a study done at several high schools in Canada showed that it takes less than 30 seconds for a savvy kid to figure out how to turn off the very expensive blocking software. Home systems have even less effective blocking software. Smart phones are 'child's play'.

Opting-in should be risky for the user. There are over 200,000 hits on kiddie porn sites per day in Canada. Police websites provide these numbers if you really want to know them. The legislation around viewing versus downloading, creating and distributing kiddie porn is quite clear. Viewing is not illegal, just reprehensible. Parents who access porn on the family computer ... morons!

So basically all Japanese porn is now illegal in the UK?

But do they need to find some hentai tentacle porn on my machine (if I'm in the UK), or are they planning to intercept everything people download and audit it for banned porn content?
