Can someone tell me how to remove the Websearch tool bar? My Webroot Spysweeper often finds this and deletes it but it is always back. Is there anyway to permently remove it? It's really annoying. I also tried to add it to my Mcafee firewall but haven't found away yet. Any help would be greatly appricated. Thanks.

    Hi clong,

Before you start please move hijackthis.exe to a folder of it´s own. The program creates backups in the folder it is in. In a Temp folder they easily disappear.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50097

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50097

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=50097
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll

    O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 auto.search.msn.com
    O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 search.netscape.com
    O1 - Hosts: 207.36.196.189 ieautosearch
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Popup Defence Updater] regsvr32 /s C:\WINDOWS\System32\pdfupd.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SafeGuard Popup Updater (required)] regsvr32 /s C:\WINDOWS\System32\PDF7d8a.dll

    O8 - Extra context menu item: RemindU - file://C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU\System\Temp\upromise_script0.htm

O9 - Extra button: RemindU (HKCU)

    O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/1435/ftp.coupons.com/v3123/cpbrkpie.cab

    O16 - DPF: {B942A249-D1E7-4C11-98AE-FCB76B08747F} (RealArcadeRdxIE Class) - http://games-dl.real.com/gameconsole/Bundler/CAB/RealArcadeRdxIE.cab

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:
    C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools <= entire folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\pdfupd.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\PDF7d8a.dll

When you are done, run HijackThis again and post the new log, so we can see if it all worked out as planned.

    Regards,

    Pieter

thanks Pieter. I did what you suggested and the latest hijack this file is posted below. I was wondering if you could help me with another problem too. My internet explorer window opens by itself and tries to connect to this website http://www.look2me.com/cgi-bin/PopupV2?ID={CADA75F4-A09A-466A-8D25-760A95573BEC}&AD=advertising. I have added the IP address to my banned IP address in the Mcafee Personel Firewall Plus. It seems to stop the inbound event but it still opens up the IE window. Once it opens the window it gives me this:

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was wondering if you had any idea how I could stop this as it happens about every 10 min.

    Thanks again,
    Chris

Nothing usefull in there... stay off the net until all files are deleted (that is after the second reboot)

Open VX2Finder it and click on the *click to find VX2.BetterInternet* button.

Then select the *Delete these files* button.
You will be left with notice about one to be deleted on reboot.
It will ask to reboot on deletion of the last file (do that)

After that last file is gone go to
Start > run > type regedit enter and Navigate to :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\GuardianTOJKL

(Note : the five letters in caps at the end may have changed [TOJKL] but it will still start with Guardian)

Right click on the Guardiano_O?? key and select delete.
    Close Regedit.
    Reboot.

    Open VX2Finder again and select:
User Agent$ > yes to confirm delete.
    and then
    Restore Policy

    Exit and reboot.

Run Vx2Finder once more and click on the *click to find VX2.BetterInternet* button. Then click *make log*.
    Post it here.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Will deleting these .dll cause me any problems? I was looking at a website that has a list of restricted sites and I noticed that the Looktome site that my IE connects to is on there. There is also a site called 2020Search. I have this in my add/remove programs, but I can't remove. I think I might format my drive. :(

I checked if there were any files in there you might need.

    That is why I posted:

    "Nothing usefull in there"

I was referring to that list of dll's
If something is in Add/Remove programs that does not necessarily mean it is still on your computer. If you want we can get rid of that later.

    Regards,

    Pieter
