I have been doing a lot of reading on your forums lately and have gained a lot of useful knowledge. I am almost confident of what I can and cannot delete from my HJT log to rid myself of spyware and the like. I have posted 2 logs in the last week but received no help whatsoever...this prompted me to try to help myself. I learned a lot though so no hard feelings.

That said, here is my problem: I have the aboutblank bug and have been constantly trying to get rid of this thing. I researched a lot of similar issues on this forum as well as the solutions. I just can't totally rid my machine of this thing!! I downloaded APM, and I am already using ad-aware 6 along with HJT 1.97.07 and Spywareguard/blaster 2.6.0.1.

PLEASEEE help me with my log and tell me what I need to do to rid myself of this and what things to look for in case I am infected again.

I am 90% sure that I need to delete the R0 and the R1 that refer to \temp files.
I am not sure about the O16's though.
Lastly, the .dll files that spyguard warns me of I cannot find.

    Hello,

Did you fix anything in your log already? There is an 02 that I am not seeing, that I think I should be seeing. It is a dll that relates to the R0 temp line.

If you did do a fix and you still have the first log file from before you did a fix, let me see it.

Taz, thank you for replying. :D

I will check on my older files and see what I have...this evening after work.

In the meantime, (maybe because my cpu is a Dell and has different user profiles) I am still having a problem with the aboutblank page. I have gone through all the steps that I saw listed on your forums but I must still be missing something on my log. My spywareguard informs me of an attempted BHO hijack but even after I find the .dll file and delete it the name changes and it's right back. I am very glad that you folks are here to help and reviewing the steps that you give people to take to fix their problems make me that much more confident to (hopefully) one day fix all of my own.
    This is a great site!!

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm
    Download FindnFix http://downloads.subratam.org/FINDnFIX.exe

Double Click on the FindnFix.exe you downloaded earlier and it will install into its own folder.
    That folder should be C:\FINDnFIX
    Browse to the folder
    Close all other open windows.
Run (double click on) the !LOG!.bat file

    Have a coffee

    When it's done:
    From the FindnFix folder.
    - Post (paste) the contents of Log.txt in this thread.
    - Attach file Win.txt to the same post. (Please attach, do not paste -- it doesn't format well)

    Hello,

I am assuming here that you have XP home edition. If this is not the case, then stop here and post back. (Print this to follow along after downloading the file below).

You will need to know how to boot into safe mode, so if you don't know how, go to this link:
    safe mode

If you don't have this program downloaded then do so now:(Don't run it yet)

    CWShredder

    Download this:
    http://computercops.biz/modules.php?name=Forums&file=download&id=1183

    *****Then immediately sign off the
internet and stay off until all steps are finished.

Extract the batch file (hiving.bat) and run it. If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning. Please allow this to run. The script is just producing a message box. Double click on the batch to run it. After a reboot the super hidden nasty file will no longer be loaded and will be visible. This will end the constant reinstall of about:Blank.

    ----------------------
You run Home and so you will restart into Safe mode.

Restart into Safe mode and find this file:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\comf.dll

Use the security tab on comf.dll and take ownership.
    Change the 'everyone special' to
'you> with Admin rights-> FULL control
Then try to delete it, if that fails try to rename
    it first to different name+ext.
    Example:
    comf.dll > bleh.txt
    bleh.txt > badfile.111

Once you have successfully deleted the file restart into Regular Windows mode.

Now open and Run CWShredder immediately (the one you downloaded from above.
Press the fix button, not scan, to clean.

    Restart and run hijackThis again.

Post your new log here in your next reply.

Also please create a new Windows.txt and attach it so we can doublecheck.

WhEW!!! Had a little trouble getting the file to delete but I finally got it! :D

Anyway, here is my latest HJT log file and also my new Findnfix log.txt
When I ran the Log.bat there was no new win.txt. How do I create that if you still need it?

    Hello,

    Log looks better.

To get the window.txt file, do this:

Copy the contents of the quote box to Notepad.
    Name the file Appinit.bat
    Save as type All Files
    Save on the Desktop.

    Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Copy that and paste it here.

Ok TAZ, I am back. Had to repair my notepad first.
I also have a couple of questions for you also.

    1. Where can I go to read up on how best to use APM and the Cleaner program?
    2. Can I delete the many backups made by HJT once you find that I my machine clean?
Once again, thank you all of your help!!

    Hi there!

    Guess what, things look good.

This one is a resource hog and if you wish to fix, you can:

    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

It will only remove the link.

Here is a link for you to go to that will give you suggestions on how to keep your computer safe:

    Happy Surfing!
