    This is a simple and clear explanation of the differences, thanks. Moderns HIPS software reduces alerts to a tolerable level, but some alerts tell you the software is working. My experience with behavior blockers (BBs) is I've never been able to tell if they're doing anything. I've used Cyberhawk/Threatfire and Mamutu and never heard a peep from them. I don't know if that was because my systems were always clean or if the BBs were ineffective. There may be some good tests that show how effective BBs are (links anyone?) - perhaps new cloud technology is helping. My current thinking is BB technology is fine as a component in a suite, or group of layered products, but I don't consider it a primary defense.
