Can anyone suggest software that does automatic reduction, if needed, to target partition.

    example:
    total size | used gb
    500gb | 5 :eek:rigin partition
    450gb | 5 :target partition

I'd typically have to reduce my 500gb partition to 450gb even though there are just 5 gb of data to be copied, though available on target partition.

5gb is just hypothetical, is there partition software that does reduction on the fly??

    mikeo1313,

I use IFW/IFD/IFL and they will all do this. It depends on the data spread. If your 5 GB of data is spread over the first 10 GB of the partition then the above apps will let you restore the image of a 500 GB partition to a 10 GB partition.

If your original partition was....( * is sectors in use, - is free space)

    [---**----**--]

then the target partition to restore into can not be smaller than...

    [---**----**]

There is a menu in the above apps that will tell you in advance the size of the smallest target partition.

I only just discovered that if you use the Copy function of the above apps rather than image/restore you can get an even better result. You could Copy the 500 GB partition and create a 5 GB partition if you desired.
