What I normally do, before I use the magic wand, is select the main area with the selection tool (freehand), so that way the image that I will be editing won't be so big anymore. Get rid of most of the image that you don't need first, then continue working on the main part.

Then you can use the magic wand tool. I'm not so familiar with Paintshop Pro, but in Photoshop, you can press alt+left mouse to remove parts of the magic wand selection - if they are interfering with the part you don't want to cut, or if the magic wand selections aren't reaching the edges of the part you want to select, you can use shift+left mouse. This might help, or it might not.

Re: Paint Shop Pro & PhotoFiltre Talk

First, just open one pic at a time, so just open the pic of Sophie and then make it transparent. How?

Once you open it, look at your layer menu on the right...
(I have mine displayed on the right by default)
you will see "background", right click on it and then on
    > promote background>layer>call it layer one, or Sophie's layer. ;)

    Why do we do that?

In order for the transparency to take into effect, otherwise
you won't be able erase the background. ;)

Then you can select the magic wand from the selection palette
at your left (mine is displayed at the left) it is the 5 th tool
starting from the hand. If you see only a rectangle, click on it and then
you will see the magic wand. There are three tools in all.

Then click inside your picture with your magic wand.
You will see marching ants...that is good...keep on clicking
and hold the shift key while doing that until you got
all areas to be deleted selectioned....

Once you have the whole unwanted area selectionned,
click on delete from your keyboard.....

---> if you notice that the magic wand erases even the areas that
you want to keep, make sure that the tolerance is set to 20 no more,
and you might reduce it to 15 is 20 is too powerful.
Any remains left in the picture can be erased with the eraser manually.<---

Settings for the magic wand might be find up in the menu once
    you select it. See screenshot....

When You are ready, open the other picture, click on the pic you
want to copy in,(Sophie) the go to Edit Go Edit>Copy>select your background>And choose from Edit "paste it as a new layer". With the moving tool, the big black cross, move the "Sophie" where you want her to appear in the picture. :)

--->You can use the menu or the right click to do a copy and paste<---

Once you stick your subject into the picture you can save the image.
If you see little spots or remains, leave it as it is, I will show ou later
or to get rid of them! Hope this help. ;)

So those are the presets I had for the magic wand, 20
Reduce it if you find that it it remove too much colours.

tip : if you don't feel comfortable with the magic wand
you can take the background eraser set to size 20, hardness 100,
    step:5 , density 100, thickness:100, rotation:eek:, opacity:100
and reduce its size and density and sharpness when you
are gettig close to the edges of your subject. :)

I'm a little further this time, but how do you get the eraser to actually erase?

OK.....some limited success! I can erase the background manually from the start, but it is slow and cumbersome. I can use the magic wand, but afterward, the eraser will not work! Why is this? Anyway, here is my first attempt. A few spots which I could not clean up!

Now Kylie here was a bit easier because the background was all black. It came away with one or two clicks.

It's a beginning, Brad and you've to be patient, don't rush it.:) If you use the background eraser, PSP will ask you to promote the current background to a layer or you can check to do it automatically. You can also change the size/settings of the background eraser to erase more.
Uguel, thanks for the detailed tutorial and the marvellous images. ;)

I'll try to put a manual together on how I do it, but now back to work. :D
See you all later and keep up the good work.

I want to put together a tutorial of about 6 posts for Adobe Photoshop - it would deal with making a signature from scratch for forums. I trust that you all use other forums that allow the use of signatures, so it could help you to gain some more depth to your online personalities.

Anyway, I will not start posting unless there are no people that disagree with this. Of course I do not want to appear like I am spamming the forum.

Thanks for all the help Uguel......
Now, I've just realised I can do this very easily in Dig Image Pro also.

Although we may not use IMG tags here as signatures, it's always great to learn new things. Thanks in advance Mishima. ;)
    My pleasure Brad. ;)
Nice to see you can do it too with DIP.

OK, as promised here's my tutorial on how to do it with PSP9.

First take a picture and use the Freehand Selection to select the section of the image.
    In this case Sophie. :D
I used the Smart Edge Freehand Selection.

Keep the selection as close as you possibly can, so you won't have to erase too much.
When done with the selection, copy it and paste it as another image.

Now in the new image use the Magic Wand to remove the rest of the surrounding.

When most parts have been removed, this is the finished result.
Not yet done of course. :D

Still some bits to clean up. So here's where the Background Eraser comes into play.
Have a look at this tutorial, it's really a great one.

Having done all of the above, here's the finished result.

I'm not that strong to explain it in detail how to do it, but I hope it gives you all an idea of my method.

Like I said before take your time to do it, graphics means patience to obtain a nice result.
Rushing gives errors or you simply forget things to erase/correct.

    I hope this helps a bit. ;)

Re: Paint Shop Pro & PhotoFiltre Talk

Okay, bigbuck...just in case, when you opened your pic in PSP9....
....did you change your background into a "raster layer" as
I said previously. Most pictures must be converted
into the "raster layer" format before you start erasing any colour in it.
    (don't ask me why....... :D )
Of course, it is not too obvious for new users of PSP. So I will give
    you simpler info here.. ;)

So, on your right (or left) there must be this window
showing after you opened you pic in PSP.....see screenshot
Right click on your background to convert it into a layer....

if it is not there, go to File>Workplace>Default
and then you will see many windows showing....
Keep the layers and the colour ones....they are the most important ones.
You can close the others.... and you have now 2 windows+your image.

Re: Paint Shop Pro & PhotoFiltre Talk

I displayed only 2 windows in the picture above for clarity.
(We don't see the colours palette which was farther to the right)
Once you see that window, right click on it, then you will
see a menu popping up like this one below........

Re: Paint Shop Pro & PhotoFiltre Talk

...click on "New Raster Layer" and call it Sophie or else....
Your picture is now converted into a layer and you can use the
eraser to erase the background. Of course, PSP9 has a background
eraser tool, and it is supposed to work better than the regular one
for it won't leave any sharp edges when erasing. In case you are
inerested to use it, here are the recomended settings....
    see screenshot below....

To copy your picture into your background:

    Open your background picture, select
your model picture (or Sophie) Go to Edit> click copy>
Select your background picture and then go back to
Edit>paste it "As a New Layer" into your background.

Wow that looks good Eldar.... :)

`mishimasan` and Eldar, thanks a lot for all your explanations!
I am sure that our friend will progress fast.

It is true that there are many ways to erase and I am sure
that Bigbuck will find the one that suits him the best!
But frankly, this kind of tutorial on blending images might be difficult
to someone who is at his first steps with Paint Shop Pro. :(
I look at the new Paint Shop Pro 9 menu and do not find it obvious
at all. Lots of possibilities there... and lots of opportunities to get
    lost as well. :doubt:

So for the next images we can go with simpler ones until our friends
and myself :p get used to the program's intricate structure of
    interconnecting passages . :D

hi :) can i ask a quick favour? i have used PhotoFiltre in the past to make images transparant as it seems to be the program that's easiest to do it with. but since my last OS reinstall i haven't installed PhotoFiltre as i want to keep installed programs down to a minimum until i get a DVD rewriter and an imaging program.

so could someone make my avatar transparant, please? i'll be very grateful indeed :)

    interfere. :)
