Are they better than host files? I had one but didn't know how to add URLs to it or anything. Can someone give me some hel[ on how to use them?

Pros of Hosts files against autoPAC

    1) Works automatically for all applications that use DNS lookups

    2) Easier to work with and understand, many different compiled lists , Hpguru,MVPS

Cons of Hosts files against autopac

    1) Not flexible. Allow blocking only on a per domain basis

A third alternative to hosts, autopac is using DNSkong

    http://accs-net.com/hosts/DNSKong.html

This runs as pseudo DNS server, which allows you to do whatever hosts does, but faster and provides more granular control. Eg you can block all domains that as the string doubleclick in them.

In terms of setup difficultly I would say DNS Kong > Autopac >Hosts.
