Please note that this version does not support Windows 7 yet.

Nice to see that the host protection is not limited, but the firewall lacks some of the features there's on the paid version, and that I believe should also be part of the free version, like excluding IPs from being blocked by a certain period of time, like ISP DNS servers, etc.

I think it should include that option.

Anyway... at least they updated their free version.

It says it supports vista and x64.

But the system requirement doesn't mention vista.

And if it supports vista,it should also work on Win 7.o_O

so what do you guys reckon? good freeware like ZA,Comodo and OA? i mean i don't care about web-protection and identity protection here...
what i want is that it should be good at what it is a FW

Great news to all internet computer users paying attention to secure their computers in internet and networked uses. A great freebie.
Outpost security software company is a found based in Russia? If so, it is great for trusty computing software.

ps: this freebie version and comodo internet security suite do not support windows server os box while as OnlineArmor all versions OnlineArmor do.

Looks very interesting, although I do not personally use firewalls that have hard-coded rules for their own apps. After installing and setting the firewall not to automatically create rules I rebooted, after re-boot I was looking through the options when a popup appeared informing me that "News as been downloaded".
I could not find a way to disable this, and no rules where in place to allow the connection, so have removed the firewall.

Agreed, as so many others have, there should be an easy way to disable the News downloads. There is a workaround solution here.

Isn't that for the full/paid version. As there where no actual rules in place to allow the comms, then it was allowed with hard_coded rules.

I will have another look because I did like the look of the filtering options. It may even make me take another look at the full version, but not if hard_coded rules are in place.

I've never used Outpost Firewall (any versions), so what is this "News has been downloaded." thing? is it a popup/nag screen? o_O

Also, how does it impact system performace? Boot-up time, memory usage, CPU usage, etc.?

Yes, that solution works for the paid version; sorry, I should have clarified. I don't yet know if it or a similar solution works for the free version.

It's just Agnitum advertising their news and products. It's not a "nag" screen. To answer your latter questions, it has virtually no appreciable impact at all on system performance. It bothers some people while for others it's not an issue.

On this installation I was given a popup and could block the outbound connection, so no popup for News.

No slowdown with boot/Internet. It is too early to say about memory use.

Good decision to update the Free version, straight HIPS and FW. :thumb:

But... will OP Free be updated along with the paid products or is it just a one off release?

Besides it's a bit strange, that they refuse to offer localized versions.
I mean translations are available, just not included. :p

Installed outpost free on my virtual machine.I read the help file and it says that when you click on update the free version will update immediately, but unfortunately when I click on update;I see a pop- up telling me to upgrade to the Pro version.
This is also discussed in the outpost forums too.

I just tried Outpost 2009 Free.

    1) It slowed down my internet speed drastically.

    2) Uses more RAM than ZA Free.

zip, if possible, could you say what else you're running?

I've found some people might say a program has 'slowed down my machine' only to later reveal they're running something like two AVs, ThreatFire, System Safety Monitor, WinPatrol, DefenseWall, and Prevx Edge etc.

Tried the free version. Together with the network filter of AVG Linkscanner gave browsing slowdown. Needed to tweak with content fitering (set off for AVG Linkscanner and IE8 plus Chrome). I have also router advertisement set to allow. This did the trick, no slow down.

    Stem,

Could you tell which network rules ACS.exe has under firewall applications. I allowed the NEWS pop-up, now I have three rules for ACS.exe. When you have less, that should be the one to disable.

    Thanks in advance

    Kees
