You don't do any on-line activity, except the ones you need to update your softwares.

    Can your computer be infected,
    1. if you are activating Windows ?
    2. if an automatic Windows Update is running ?
    3. if you do a Windows Update via the normal MS updating website ?
    4. if you do an update of Firefox/Thunderbird via Help/Check for updates ?
    5. if you do an update of any scanner.
    6. etc. etc. etc.

Hypothetically, your computer can be infected anytime its connected to the internet.

theres several factors to consider tho:

is your copy of Windows up-to-date?
did you harden Windows and disable unnecessary services?
    do u have a firewall?
do u have an antivirus or other means of security?

    **********************************************

if your connected for just a brief moment, id say the likelihood of infection is low.

    Hello,
If the server at the other end is compromised, you can be infected. If not, the chances are not big. Furthermore, do you TRUST people at the other end of the stick?

I expected such answers, just wanted a second opinion as confirmation. It's logical and at the same time a pity. :D
