Is it possible to install software updates in Ubuntu without connecting to a network? (I keep my machine strictly offline for security reasons.)
If you use LTS, you can buy updated point release CD's when they are released (http://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=976) which include updates, they are released approx every 6 months. If you have another machine that can connect to the internet, you could use that machine to download the updated packages, copy to removable storage and install on your machine. Cheers, Nick
The best method is to create an online system that is a mirror of the offline system. Configure apt so that installed packages are not deleted on the online system, copy them to the offline system & install them there.
If it's not connected to the internet or a network, then what difference does it make really if it's updated or not?
Hi Just a tea break during soccer match France-Germany for a few words... It has been demonstrated that backdooring .*NIX systems during an update is not science fiction...and for critical systems, an updated OS is always better (remember Debian OpenSSL vulnerability). Then update and backup without networking is just one of the key of critical security. The previous answers can be summarized here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/I...lling_packages_without_an_Internet_connection http://askubuntu.com/questions/974/how-can-i-install-software-or-packages-without-internet-offline In addition to APTonCD and Kerryx, i can also mention Sushi, huh? and Wubdepends http://sushi-huh.sourceforge.net/ http://wubdepends.sourceforge.net/ Also a word for a recent and helpful source list generator for Ubuntu http://repogen.simplylinux.ch/ Rgds
Here are a set of tutorials that offer a solution: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1901446 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1900550 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1915489 I've done a modified version of this on a computer with a low bandwidth connection. I installed Synaptic online and I'm able to do the repository updates online, but downloaded the actual packages on a different (Windows) computer. Seemed to work ok.
