Office 2003 problems

I didn't know where else to put this question, but since it is a recent occurence I'm thinking there may be a malware or virus problem.

Anyway, I have Office 2003 with Windows XP Pro. It has worked great until recently. Now, EVERY TIME I open a new document the program, no matter which (looks like Frontpage is saved for some reason) program, it takes several minutes to do a virus scan....at least that's what it says on the bottom line.

I use and update frequently, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and AVG 7.5 (free).

I have tried a reinstall of the Office suite, but no difference.

Does anyone else have any experience like this, or can offer some suggestions or clues? Much appreciated.
