Thanks for the info. So far NIS is running as well as any AV I have used.
I am interested in seeing how it does on the next AVC tests. However, I will go back to Avira when I am satisfied that Norton runs well on my laptop. That will give me another option.

    Regards,
    jerry

I noticed a new feature in the '11 beta last week, before you launch an executable file for the first time, a small window appears showing you the number of users who have used said file, the Norton reputation rating, how recently the file appeared, what website(s) it was found on, what country it was created in.

Below all this information are three options, if I remember correctly, Run, Quarantine, Block. I would have to boot my test PC to take another 'gander but it is shaping up to be quite nice! Combo'd with Norton DNS and you have a great level of protection. I suggested a new feature to Symantec for possibly implementing the UAC actions on said window too. Would be cool to see ;)

That sounds great. Norton did so well on AV-C Dynamic test that I got interested. Prior to that it seemed to me to be pretty average. I am looking forward to the results of the Aug tests.
I do not change AVs based upon one or two test, but other things being equal I prefer the ones with the best detection/blocking rates. That particularly comes into play when I need a new license.

    Regards,
    Jerry

So now I have to deal with a UAC prompt as well as Norton's prompt?

Norton UAC had the "remember this" option for each prompt. And the Norton AV/IS prompt you will only see once per executable. However, it is still in beta so all of this can change.

This is not a new feauture . This was first introduced in Norton version 2010 . In both version 2010 and 2011 beta it has been changed a bit a few times.

You need to change "Download Insight Full Report" in Web Settings from "Unproven only" to "Always" before it will give the pop-up on everything.

I was going to try the 2011 beta. I registered, received the emails for the download site and license code. However, when I attempted to access the download site I could not do it. There were some instructions re cookies, and I followed the instructions, but no luck.

I decided it was too much trouble.
I don't intend to keep Norton, but will go back to Avia IS after a few more days of checking Norton IS 2010. That is running extremely well on my laptop, but so do several others that I have licenses for.

    Regards,
    Jerry

What is with the pop up notices in NIS 2010 stating that Nortion is performing background tasks. What background tasks? I check the History, but don't see anything note worthy except Idle Quick Scans performed. Is this the background tasks?

From my experience, that's usually what it is -- either an idle quick scan, or occasionally an idle full scan.

Never heard of that problem before. If you still want to, you could download from Softpedia and use the key from your email.

    Thanks, I got it.
I assume it requires a clean install and I cannot install over 2010?

    .
Since it's a beta I would uninstall 2010 first. The uninstall is fast though - the reboot afterward probably takes longer :)

Thanks, and I did uninstall 2010. Yes, the reboot takes a lot longer.

Out of curiosity... is the delay the time it takes to connect to the network?

    @mhl6493 and 3GUSER........

Thank you. I thought it might be the idle scans, but didn't think about community watch and insight.

I have been trying the 2011 beta for a couple of days. I really like it, and it is running as well as any I have tried. I will be very interested in the AV-C test that should be out in a few weeks.

Although I think I will return to Avira IS, this Norton IS is a real keeper.:thumb:

I'm really enjoying the fact that it protects against known exploits in the OS and in software, I wish more AV's would pick up on this :)

Under the application settings DefenseWall shows poor under being trustworthy. I wonder why they say this as most people on Wilders knows different. They do not tell you why. This is the kind of thing that makes Norton look STUPID.

Defensewall doesn't have "poor" as rating for me.
