In my opinion Norton's impact on your pc is slightly higher than ESET's and Avira's. But if you include all major security products in your comparison, Norton certainly belongs to the top performing group.

Thank you I may check it out. I'm testing Avira, KIS 2012 Beta and was curious about Norton, even though I'm not a big fan.

    Cheers.

I cannot tell a difference between Norton Internet Security 2012 Beta and Avira AntiVir Personal on system impact.

I agree that Norton indeed sells light products (I said they certainly belong to the top performing group in terms of pc impact), but in my eyes compared to for example Avira and especially ESET it does increase the boot time.

Since there has only been 1 beta it will be a while before we really know how they compare. Betas usually have debug code in them.

I have not tested NIS 2010 on this machine and I find NIS 2012 lighter than NIS 2011. In feel (boot time; never noticed an impact after boot) and numbers.

Re: Symantec Norton Internet Security 2012

Symantec Norton Internet Security 2012 (beta) looks like a very good anti-virus, anti-malware solution suite.

Just by seeing the performance of NIS 2012 in videos against 0-day threats you can tell that it is one of the best products right now:

And even the 2011 version of Norton is very good, it is the best protection tool according to AV-comparatives at the moment:

    From the Norton Beta Forum:
So, my understanding is you can continue to test the Beta for free until the final version is released.

Ok, in my opinion norton products are fast, they should perform a better resource usage (lowering their RAM requirements, i am not refering to RAM usage when idle ;) )

Nortons 12-14meg of ram usage is too much for you, but you cool using Eset, which user way more than that? Doesn't make any sense.

No to go off-topic, but ESET is way lighter on the I/O usage.
Everything is loaded into ekrn.exe in the memory wich is why it uses a little more RAM, and because of that it's very light on the system.

He said he is not referring to idle RAM usage, but RAM requirements wich means RAM under full load.

My peak working set for NIS 2012 is about 160meg. That seems pretty low compared to others I have tested.

Why does anyone care how much ram an antivirus uses under "full load"? Do people try to use the computer during a manual full scan? - not a good idea since the AV wants the CPU as well as ram. NIS does a good job of background scanning without impacting system performance.

Can someone give a scenario where the AV ram requirement actually makes a difference other than on old computers with insufficient ram to begin with?

If you buy NIS (Or any other version of Norton), if the version changes to 2012, will they give the update free?

Ex. I bought NIS 2011, before my license ends NIS 2012 is released . . . Do i get the update free or i have to renew? o_O

In the past the license from the previous version has always worked for the new version. In fact I've used a license from NIS 2007 for 2010. The new version might not be offered through LiveUpdate though. You may have to download and install the "30 day trial" and then input your key.
