Same problem here... something as simple as making a shortcut to the desktop for "siw.exe" freezes my computer for up to a minute with nod32 using 100% cpu resources.

Does siw.exe take long to scan?

I am finding it difficult to use remote desktop because the cpu usage is so horrible... This is very sporadic and frustrating. I opened a trouble ticket and the solution was un/reinstall. I really don't want to do that for x number of machines and it very much seems like a workaround too me.

Use process monitor and have it filter down to file system activity from ekrn.exe. If there is a file/exectuable that is being modified a lot it can cause slowdowns and should be excluded. Also be aware that the system startup files are scanned during user logons and after a successful definition update and that will spike CPU usage.
