An email to ESET some time ago was not answered.
My licenses expires next month and renewal is nailed to the following point:

Starting a computer, NOD 4.2.40.10 (XP and Win7) always checks system files automatically.
Evidently there is no way to stop this behaviour.
I would like to have control over what is checked and when.
Does one have to live with that "feature" or is there a hidden switch somewhere to stop it?

By disabling startup scans you will effectively disable one of the protection layers and make your computer more vulnerable to malware attacks.

Well, we know that hint -
deselect other progs from running at startup but not ours...

There is no checkmark in that box to check files at startup.
Yet, NOD32 is just doing that nevertheless.

Then it must be real-time protection that scans files that are accessed by the operating system or other applications which is pretty normal.
