Hi, I am using True Image OEM edition which came bundled with a Freecom external hard drive. The manual provided states it is TI 6.

I have had to replace an existing SATA hdd supplied in our DELL pc. I've replaced the drive with a different make but the same size.

I now have a completely empty disk that I need to restore my last image to. I used the recovery CD that I created which booted the PC and the external USB drive is detected. When I'm asked to select a partition/disk to restore I can see a drive C which is the USB drive and two CD/DVD drives.

I locate the image and select to restore the whole hard drive. When I'm asked to choose a destination, all I can see is the connected USB drive and the next button is ghosted. It would seem that it's not seeing the new drive at all.

The drive is visible in the bios and I've even used another bootable disk to use Fdisk on it to create a partition. That worked fine but still the Acronis boot disk cannot see the drive.

Is TI6 capable of restoring the disk image to a brand new drive or is it only for restoring to the same drive the image was taken from?

    I'm a bit stuck here.

TI6 is 3 versions behind and my guess is that it may not understand SATA drives.

You can download the trial version of TI9 and make the recovery CD. According to an earlier post from Acronis the trial recovery version doesn't make images but will recover them. Hopefully the newer version will do the trick.

Yeah I think you are right. When I made the boot disc, I only got as far as making sure it recognised the USB drive and explored an image.

Trouble is, I can't seem to install True Image 9. Like other people on this forum, I'm getting a message half way through installation along the lines of "Can't register at this time". Other people have been provided with a link to a version of the software that doesn't require the Internet registration. I am currently patiently waiting for a similar link.

    Thanks for your reply.
