    I have checked with Ad-aware, and Spybots both, Spybots picks up two registry keys called:

    AppID\{D056500-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7} and

    CLSID\{D056500-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7}

    I then select fix the problems, but next time i reboot if i run
    SS&D again the same two keys will be found.

    Help Me Mr. Wizard!!!

    Back again,

    Yes, i do use Snag-t for screen captures

    I did the two fixes, and then when i ran spybots the two keys were back, but also a third one:

    CoolWWWSearch.008k: URL Search Hook (Registry value, fixed)
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2000478354-884357618-682003330-1004\Software\
       Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}

    PeopleOnPage.AproposMedia: Application ID (Registry key, fixed)
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{D0565000-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7}

    PeopleOnPage.AproposMedia: Class ID (Registry key, fixed)
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D0565000-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7}

    then i let spybot try to fix all three and rebooted. The two came back but not the new one.

    I also did a search in regedit for the key, and it turned up in another spot,

    EventSystem
    {26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}
    EventClasses
    {D0565000-...}...{00000000-0000-0000-000000000000}--{0...}

    I have no idea what anything in the registry means....

    Okay,

    Thanks for your help.

    You got me to thinking about BHO's becaused you asked about Snag-it. I am starting to think it might be better to get rid of them. They are especially ones like Norton, and Acrobat...you can simply right click menu to open them anyway, why do i need another button on IE-6?

    Thanks again,

    HandsOff

    Hi HandsOff,

    Have a look here:
    Check the following items in HijackThis.
    Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/stp/ymsgr*http://my.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sb/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com/ext/search/search.html

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/su/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com
    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    Then reboot and ignore the results of Spybot S&D until the next official update.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hello Pieter,

    Good to hear from you...and just as i am about to enter "the kill mode" where i start deleting everything in sight! i will do as you advise...only, what do you think of adding:

    03-msdxm.ocx to the hit list. I did a search on it, and it appears to be a macromedia radioband toolbar that has been difficult to get rid of.

    i will add this, i just reinstalled everything, because i had a hard drive failure, and was not cautious enough while installing programs. Comcast cable is my ISP. I deleted their "support" but left their CFD intact, only disabled from auto start. well i researched that and found it is another spy totally unnecessary for Comcast to run, so i uninstalled it. there is no more CFD.exe....but, guess where the macromedia radio band comes from? when i reinstalled comcast it included a folder in favorites called internet radio, or something like that. I deleted the folder because i'd just as soon choose my own favorites, but maybe there is more involved.

    bottom line:
    i have deleted the Client foundation CFD.exe since last post

    i will make the changes you suggest and then post again real quick!

    Since the last set of fixes with HijackThis, i ran spybots and found but did not fix the same three keys:

    CoolWWWSearch.008k: URL Search Hook (Registry value, nothing done)
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2000478354-884357618-682003330-1004\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}

    PeopleOnPage.AproposMedia: Application ID (Registry key, nothing done)
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{D0565000-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7}

    PeopleOnPage.AproposMedia: Class ID (Registry key, nothing done)
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D0565000-9DF4-11D1-A281-00C04FCA0AA7}

    (oh, since I am targeting Comcast for suspicious thoughts, the:
    016-shockwave flash object is probably Comcast related, as Shockwave
    is needed to produce the page that you log in with and therefore i pressed
    ok to download their shockwave plugin...)

    I hope you don't mind my including my suspicitions, because I am not trying to second guess you, just trying to run the ideas by you to see what you think...I have worried about my tendancy to add my insights ever since the surgeon performing a major procedure on me handed me the scalpel and said, "...you know so much? Here, do it yourself..."

    Hi HandsOff,

    You can fix the radio bar if you want with HijackThis.
    I did that a long time ago and never missed it one bit.
    But it does not come from Comcast but is installed with IE.

    Shockwave is by MacroMedia. Again not related to Comcast, but used all over the net.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Okay,

    i will get rid of the radio tool bar then because i think my chances of getting a handle on how my computer works will be that much easier if i do not have a lot of redundant features with quixotic names.

    Just posting to give this thread a sense of closure. My difficulties with PeopleOnPage seem to be resolved. I'm not sure why...

    the additional actions on my part were to reinstall Spybots, but not the beta version, and also to delete the yahoo tool bar.

    The weirdest thing is that when i looked in add and remove programs at yahoo there were two entries, one for yahoo messenger, and one for yahoo toolbar. They were both exactly 7.05mb in size, both used "rarely", which is a lie, and both shown to have been used last on the same date.

    I, always ready to jump to the wrong conclusion, have immagined for some time that both entries really were for the same program. To my surprise they were not. I deleted the toolbar, and yet the messeger remains, and still functions. Go figure.

    Personally, i think my computer is haunted

    alls well that ends well. Thanks for helping out!
