If Antivir is this good, why even bother with other programs?

Only because it did not run well on my system. Otherwise I would be using it even over F-Secure on the laptop.
If you have not tried it, then you might be missing a bet. It is an excellent Av if it runs well. Give it a trial.

    Best,
    Jerry

In addition to Secure Computing’s own Anti-Malware engine, the Webwasher Anti-Virus solution enables up to three brand-name A/V vendors solutions (McAfee, Sophos, and CA) to provide inbound screening of all Web traffic.

So number 1 uses the engine from Antivir. That explains it. So much protection for such a little price.

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between Antivir free and Antivir paid?

    this forum is biased!
not much i dont think ... free version leaves a big gap for viruses as it offers no email scanning, but i aint too sure what else.

If you're opening email attachments, that's a very big difference.

with the low cost of the paid version with the extras, it really is worth it.

It is my understanding that the free version treats email as any other download. If it contains a virus that virus is not dangerous until you open the mail/attachment. When that happens Avira Classic will block it and prevent its execution.
While I prefer POP 3 scanning, I am not convinced it is any safer since the virus cannot execute in Classic.

I would not let that discourage me from using Classic if it ran well.

    Jerry

That is great. I think as more realize the potential of tests like yours, they will come. I mean look at the ones not maybe at the top, but showing continued growth through each round of tests. As a consumer, instead of bailing on them, you realize they are continuing to get better, so you stick with them. To me, it is a win-win scenario thanks to sites like yours.

Maybe, I have not burned any bridges. I have hoped that the minor irritations of the startup, and updates will be fixed. It might then, just be the best around. :D

So is Sophos. Other vendors like Symantec also provide UTM solutions. Fortinet has shown good performance even with this huge amount of samples. I'm glad IBK will include Fortinet in his tests.

I was under the impression that NOD32 was not allowed to be tested by this group/person...

My 2 faves at the top NAV and Avira.

Is there a list for false positives.
In a true controlled trial there is a cross over with "placebo" samples eg benign small exe files perhaps packed with some suspicious tools, or benign utilities renamed, along with renamed malware packed and unpacked.
The testers should be blinded to what they are scanning.

Cant see the "placebo" arm in the trial database: is it there?

The one issue I have with Avira is a highish FP rate.
NAV virtually never in my "real world" gives false pos results.
Although this may have little meaning re detecting malware, how many times do we see FPs from scanners....

Just once, evn though it is not 'antivirus' I would love to see BOClean up against the rest: just for interest sake. ;)

    See here for some interesting results re packed malware;

    IBK any comment?

Could you ask webwasher ppl to have their product in it? I'm still stunned at these results.
