New Drive Snapshot build released.

Personally I believe it's brought about a need for a new Operating System.

 

I kinda think it didn't even take MicroSnort very long to realize that.

Yeah, it's a monthly event (you can bet on that)! Like Blues implied, I don't mess with programs that are already working perfectly for me - especially without knowing the changes (if any).

 

Yeah I had contacted the Support about the frequent monthly updates. And they said no need to update monthly unless a major version with detailed release note is released. From then on I don't update anymore. Only keep an eye on any available release notes.

 

The 3rd release in May is dated May 30th (just 10 days after the prior build). While I don't know what the changes are I can't help but believe that 3 updates inside of a month spells 'bug fixes'!

Thanks - unlike an apparently increasing number of users, I like using the latest version!

 

There are size-differences (albeit small) between the current and previous builds, so I presume there were program changes.

Ditto! DS is been for my systems ever since Windows XP to current Win 8 absolutely stellar in every way, performance, accuracy, and best of all dependability. In the same company as Shadow Defender!

DS is a dream to automate. Backups and restores.

 

+1 Same here! Only flaw is the recovery to a smaller partition than the image...but that is easy to 'fix'. Solid as a rock in every way. It and Macrium Reflect (Free Edition) is all one needs IMO.

What's the 'fix'?

 

Not really. DS can not be used for EXT4 partition imaging. It also does not support UEFI GPT with secure boot.

 

The 'fix' would be to make the receiving partition bigger, slightly, than the backup restore image made by Snapshot, which can usually be done by either stretching the partition (if it is on a hard drive w/ another partition you can borrow space from), or change to another hard drive that is larger. This would be necessary in an emergency. Now with Macrium Reflect - it will allow the image of 15GB to be restored to a partition the size of the data, so it *will* restore to a 'smaller partition' in effect. To explain - Say you have 10GB of data on a 15GB partition that you imaged with Snapshot...with Snapshot it will not restore to *anything* less than 15GB, but Reflect will. What Oliverjia says is true also. In those cases, for EXT4 and UEFI GPT use another imaging program such as Reflect - in my case, I have not checked with Snapshot to see if it would 'work' with Linux and Windows 8.

 

I started using DS shortly after buying my WinXP PC some 11 years ago. Over that time it has a perfect backup and restore record (initially with WinXP and more recently with Win7) so I don't have any real druthers about this terrific little portable app. My only complaint would be the lack of support communication re updates and the changes/fixes that were made!

Obviously, DS was developed strictly for Windows (and DOS), not for Linux or OS X.

I guess secure boot is not be enabled in UEFI (Win7) system because DS is working perfectly.

It might be solid for systems installed on legacy BIOS, but it won't work for UEFI secure boot, which nowadays most new computers come with; many ppl use Linux so it would be nice for DS to add support for common Linux file systems. In other words, it need to be evolved to meet the requirement of the new ecosystems..

 

That may be true of Win8 systems, but secure boot can be disabled.

It might be nice for Linux users but afaik Linux only has 1.74% of the market and that hasn't been increasing! So I don't see where it's cost-effective for Tom to devote his time to that (especially considering that Linux users are not used payware). And as for Win8, it has been a bust (as Windows goes). It is nowhere close to overtaking XP not to mention Win7 which represents over 50% of all users! While Tom may come up with a solution for Win8's (EFI) secure boot, my guess is that he will wait to get his hands on the developer's edition of Win9, which should be available in a few months.

well, UEFI and secure boot is not only for Win8, I think it will also be there for Win9. I am not using DS anymore because I have new computers and I don't want to disable secure boot. There are tons of other imaging software that can do both secure boot and Linux.
Windows XP is dead now, and mainstream support for Windows 7 is ending at the end of this year. Again, DS is good for what it can do, but lack some important features as an imaging software.
