I don't think i'll be ever able to put avast! away completelly. I'm simply attached to it :) Even though i'm testing AVIRA again, i'm still running avast! with Network Shield only to compliment AVIRA and to simply have it installed.

i have to correct me on this.
the personal version will have a different upgrade process.

as you perhaps already read the migration to the new version will be done by uninstalling av8 and installing the new version 9. this will be done by antivir itself informing you via slide up about this update and after confirming starting the upgrade progress. licence file and configuration (execept firewall settings) will be saved and installed with the new version.
for the free version there will be a slider telling you what to do to get the new version.

    BTW. RC ist available

I'm mostly wondering about these things:

    - Will there still be that idiotic advertisement popup on updates in free version?
    - Will free version also detect spyware and adware?
    - Will free version check for updates only once per 24 hours?

I was already fine with pretty much everything, but these 3 things are still the main reasons why i never really wanted to use AVIRA despite its superior detection.

Auto updated to RC this morning without a problem and it's running VERY fast. Still a few glitches to iron out but this is really nice!

Any internal unofficial predicted date of release? AVIRA webpage says "in march" so this may take a while...

    1. this won't change
    2. we'll see. as far as it has not changed in the last days it will be added
    3. don't think this will be changed. the standard job for the premium versions has been changed from 24 to 2 hours, but i'm not sure about the free version.
well internal sure. but no official one. it will be released when avira thinks it is time. personally i would say not before next week.

Is the beta still set to only warn of no updates after 7 days by default? That seems like too long of a time. In v8 it's 3 days.

Their ignorance to fix false positives is unbeliveable.
I've sent them Savesel.exe file, a freakin Need for Speed Carbon tool to select profiles from other players or profiles restored from formated system.
Fixed? After like 3 submissions and half a year, nothing.
Then there are 2 files from something else. Exactly the same.
I don't know, are they just plain stupid or something?
When i've submited the same 2 files to ALWIL, they fixed false positive in few hours. So much for "we have greatest detection". And lamest false positives correction...

if this new version 9 come's without HIPS then i don't know if it will be so strong protection against all new threat out there.
There are being released at least 20,000 new threat daily and with HIPS you would be protected well but just Avira i am not sure.

I thought someone "trjam" said that version9 will be released with HIPS o_O

Did you submit the FP's from within the quarantine screen?

I submitted 2 FP's that way a couple of days ago and they were both fixed in less than 24 hours.

Have you emailed them to heuristik2@avira.com? I find Stefan to be much more responsive.

Detections were not heuristic based (HEUR).

I send any fp's (Even those not heuristic based) to Stefan and he takes a look at them.

Don't blame it on trjam, he's just a user like you and me. Wait and see, in a few days it will be released.

    Cheers

I think I recall Avira stating that adding a HIPS would decrease the on-demand detection rate which is something they don't want.

This was the reason why I switched to Avast and never looked back. I sent FP's in for various things like that and they never fixed them. I hope their version 9 will be a bit quicker on checking the FP Department.

True. When I was testing CIS I had sent them some FP's and they eventually made it in but it took awhile. Don't get me wrong, I think Avira has a very good AV, as I have it running on one of my machines since version 7.

I sent an FP about wrong detection of KC Software's Photo Resizer to Avira, they responded and it was rectified within a week.

They say HIPS will be a separate beta, so I guess we can test it sooner.
