i know there's many ping/monitoring programs and some have various alerts
problem i'm experiencing is occasionally the net disconnects for a minute or
    so then re-connects
when i'm concentrating on the screen i don't notice the modem lights but what
happens when browsing is clicking on a new page it's extremly slow loading
and - since it's happened several times - i know to look at the modem and the
lights will be on but after maybe a couple of minutes - if i happen to have caught
the disconnect as it begins - lights will go off confirming the disconnect

so what i'm looking for is preferably free a utility that can pickup this disconnect
process as it begins - before the lights go off and popup or sound alert there's a
disconnect occuring - any recommendations ?

    Hi Trdr,

Give the folk's here a few fact's about your connection setup. Are both 2K and XP affected?
    I see .... an unresolved, ongoing problem - https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=203420

Shaw cable, Sygate - which modem did they supply? You running isp soft to boot?

How long have you had Shaw?

    hi GlobalForce, thanks for responding
had Shaw always, 5 years, that previous problem was resolved as soon as i
installed the replacement modem - motorola surfboard sb5101

i've only w2k installed and you'd need to tell me where to look to find out if
    there's " isp soft to boot ? "

what i'll be running on a dedicated trading computer is ninjatrader with the
zenfire data feed to trade the es mini futures contract. there's been problems
reported about the zenfire feed going down as well as data feed related
order entry problems that would only be known about by someone entering
an order at that time, so if zenfire/exchange goes down it/they go down
but if the isp feed goes down ninjatrader has to be re-started which takes a
few minutes and having an advanced warning there's a problem would add a
    safety factor to trading

haven't contacted shaw about these disconnects, if the ping/monitoring sw
were able to diagnose the reason for the disconnect as well as alerting that
might be useful info even if nothing could be done to resolve such disconnects

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago with Comcast.

I'd be fine, then out of nowhere I'd suffer a 2-4 minute connection drop (modem still said it was connected) I'd sometimes go for days between events, sometimes it would happen 3 or 4 times within an hour.

I eventually just left a window open with a constant pinging on the "worse" days to find it. You could also run traceroutes during an outage and see where it is happening.
