While trying to update Windows 98 at the update site I get what is probably a regular occurence with an error message ox800b0004.
There are a number of solutions offered but after trying them all the same error message bobs up.
Surely someone must have an answer to this one please :'(

    Hi dakota2,

Not sure if this will be of any help, or if you've already looked through this page, but at the Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooting page you will find the same error message given (2nd one down) with steps to follow to fix it:

"While the Windows Update site is loading, you receive Initialization Error 0x800B0004 or Error 0x800B0003"

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

(I'll move this thread over into Software & Services forum) <-- Done

It is very annoying-I have played with all the trouble shooter fixes & nothing works unless I missed something along the way so I will try again.
:( Thanks for at least trying anway & let me know if you find another fix.

I may have missed this on the above link....but have you run across the below suggestion ?

    Code:
I was not able to sign in to MSN or access Windows Updates
and got the 0x800B004 error. Jupiter Jones [MVP] from MSN
gave several suggestions at the Windows Update Newsgroups
    and I finally found one that worked ! ! ! I have searched for hours! ! !

He said to register the following files with these steps:
    1. Click on Start, Run and type REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL
Wait until you get the popup message that this process succeeded.
    2. Click on Start, Run and type REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL
Wait until you get the popup message that this process succeeded.
    3. Click on Start, Run and type REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL
Wait until you get the popup message that this process succeeded.
    4. Now try to access MSN and the Windows Update site and
see if you get the same error.

Thanks but tried this too with the first one "softpub" not working while the other ones did . I can't believe that noone else has ever had this problem & that an easy fix is not available after all W98 has been around for ages.
Staggering that Microsoft support page is no able to have all these hiccups covered.
I ran BELARC ADVISOR which showed several hot fixes had failed & should be reinstalled but I cannot find anywhere to get them. They were
    UPD238453,239887,256015,259728,260067,273017,273991,Q823559.
Found something about the last one & think I have now installed it but not certain.
Others must be in a still to be discovered black hole somewhere.
Is this crazy or is this crazy? o_O
