first please unzip hijackthis to it's own folder not a temporsary folder so any backups it makes will remain and not get lost

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    All the O1 hosts entries

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [system check] C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\updater.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OozeChic] C:\PROGRA~1\driveeq\SIGNACE.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System Service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msrexe.exe
    O16 - DPF: {10000000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - file://C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\vhmtgcwu.exe

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files

    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\vhmtgcwu.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\updater.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msrexe.exe

    and Delete these folders

    C:\PROGRAm files\driveeq

    then
    Reboot normally &

download CWshredder from https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=14086 then Run it
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Now as CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    then reboot &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R294 15.04.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Alright thanks for the response....let's see; I did as told although I couldn't delete those 4 files/folder b/c they weren't found under search, I made sure hidden files were searched also, so maybe their gone already.

I couldn't download spybot b/c it said "CGI-limits reached, please try again later!" But i did run ad-aware and it did rid of a lot.

I still can't access spywareinfoforum.com using this computer, and after clicking the show hiden files/folders desktop.ini ans thumbs.dl are located in My Music, are they ok?

    Here's my new log

    Hi hoos1,

    Probably so....

It seems Ad-Aware got the problems. I would still recommend getting SpyBot as it complements Ad-Aware and they both work together keeping your system clean. Try back later.

I am not having any problems. try again and see if you can get there. http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/ If not, what kind of error message are you getting?

    Yes, those files are OK....

And it looks clean. Are your problems fixed?

    Regards,
    Kent

I've got a sneaking suspician that something has edited another part of your hosts file or dropped another hidden one

    please do this
    download & unzip this
    http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/VB_Projects/HostsFileReader.zip

run it and click on search for hosts

open each one it finds in turn and see if any references to spywareinfo are in there

    then reprt back please

before you actually delete it can you please copy the entire hosts file and send it to me at submit@thespykiller.co.uk

it should have shown up in the hjt log and I want to see what else it is doing

use the hosts file reader I told you about
the easiest and safest way to fix the problem is to scan for hosts again, when it finds any files , click on it in the bottom window, the one in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts is the one that should exist so press reset default and the same to any others

    where are the others

hey dvk, what I posted before was all I had, when I pressed scan for hosts I gots a total of 2 in the little bottom window, the first was "C:\I386\HOSTS" and the second was the one I posted before "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" when I double clicked on the second I got that list IU posted of all those sites, I'm not sure if your asking for something else, but should I go ahead and press reset defualt on the 2nd one?

    thanks

the C:\I386\HOSTS had this when I double clicked(guessing its ok)

the C:\I386\HOSTS is a backup and should be read only and shouldn't be infected

so the reset to default on the second one in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc should cure the problem
