    Hi highsea,

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\pplpcha.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    Thank you, Pieter.

The problem returned after the first reboot, but the Lycos .dll did not reload.

I was able to delete the Lycos folder and run HJK again and delete the reg keys again. I had already deleted the Incredifind folder.

The second reboot looks much better, IE kept my home page settings, but system performance is still very degraded. I will continue on with the next step and notify you of the results.

    Thanks again,
    highsea

    Download: "CopyLock" and unzip:
    http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/CopyLock.zip

    set up these options:
    -Check- 'Show Source paths'
    -Check: 'Allow Downgrade'

Click the 'Add' tab->'Files to rename'
In the 'Look in..' Dialogue box navigate to your
    C:\WINDOWS\System32 directory and stop there!
(*you will not see the file!)
Copy and paste into the 'File name' field:
    KBDIEP.DLL
    Hit ->Add.
In the result (destination) erase entire output (copy of...) and
    paste this, instead:
    KBDIEP.DLX
Hit 'ok' (On warning of different extension as well)
and on the main box hit the->'Apply' tab
**You will be asked to restart computer!
    Do so right away, next--
navigate to System32 and delete the "KBDIEP.DLX"
    file, as it'll be visible!

    ***ATTENTION***
If you get "file not found" error during the process, that
    means it will not work.

    First try this one:
Please download TheKillbox from here: http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip

Unzip the files to a folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\KBDIEP.DLL

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The filenameand path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

When you're back in windows, please run the latest version of cwshredder

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi Pieter

Okay, I have deleted the offending .dll. I ended up using reglite and winfile. I ran CWSshredder and it showed 2 instances which it cleaned.

    I downloaded and applied SP4.

I ran HJK, and it looks good. I also ran Find-all.

Here is the logfile from find-all:

No nasty dll found. The BHO's are accounted for (Googlebar, Spybot and Acrobat) No more protocol hijack.

    Looks good to me.

These cws hijackers comes back normally and we are still working on ways to kill them off permanently, what works for some doesn't work for others, but some get rid of it fairly easily.

A workaround seems to be install a good firewall, lists here http://www.wilders.org/firewalls.htm and block these ranges of IP addresses, both incoming and outgoing 213.159.117.0-213.159.118.255, 209.66.114.0-209.66.115.255 and 81.211.105.0-81.211.105.255 both TCP & UDP
That stops the known cws servers responding or the hidden files on your computer updating. This works sometimes but not always, but it's a help with many versions of the cws pest. The problem with this approach is that some good sites might also be blocked.

    Regards,

    Pieter

I will try to block those IP ranges.

I want to thank you for all your help. I couldn't have worked through this alone. I have also applied all of the critical updates from Microsoft, and the new Java VM. At least I know now how to work through the cleanup if I get reinfected.

BTW, the variants I had were CWS.Searchx and CWS.SmartSearch.
