I have a client with NAV Corporate Edition. When I click on About the description comes back

    server/client gold (mfg only)

There are 4 computers networked together but there is no server. They were part of a domain a couple of years ago however that has not been the case since the 4 machines were reformatted, XPP reinstalled along with NAVCE from the backup copy on one of the machines

It runs live update and says that everything is up to date.

Question is, isn't there an annual subscription to this? If so, they have not paid for anything.

I suspect that they really don't have AV protection at all.

    Might I be correct?

As I know, you should pay the license fee, but if you choose unmanaged install, it will update and work.

    "unmanaged install"

I haven't seen that term anywhere in the documentation. Can you explain please?

THere has been no indication that the subscription is expiring and nothing has been sent to them re: pay up or your exposed.

How well will it work without a "paid subscription"?

What version do you have? You can't update? It won't check your license, even you download the fix from the website, no time limit check.
If you have the version 10, during install it will ask whether it is managed or not.

The definition file for version 7.6 is no longer provided, you can't use it any more.
