The power of Wilders :D. The threat of bad publicity is always a good club to use!!

Now wait until you receive your registration number before you go on the Guinness!

when its all said and done the single Kav engine for $9 is a pretty good deal for a back up scanner . As long as you dont expect any one from boomerange to give any intelligent support .

  4. Believe it or not, half an hour after the response from techservice, I received my long-awaited registration code (17:30 GMT). By that time I had already gone to the pub (for socialising, NOT for drowning my sorrow ove AVK). Found it this morning when I opened my email. Filled in the registration, updated the definitions, and it is right now doing a full scan of my PC, without interfering with any programs (other than Mozilla's Firefox opening, which is slow under the best of circumstances anyway).

Thank you all for your moral support.

Like Blackcat said, the name "Wilders Security Forums" must have set off alarm bells!

Now for the $64,000 question. The EXE and DLL files are all dated from 2002/2001. Has anyone found out if (and how) there is an update possible for the engine(s)?
    AVK.exe Version 11.0.5.0, dated 2002
    AVKWctl.exe Version 2.0.0.0, dated 2002
    AVKcom.exe Version 1.0.0.1, dated 2001

Could one e.g. download a trial-version of Kaspersky and then exchange the DLL-files?
Interesting to see your comments on this.

Glad to hear you have finally manage to update.

The 'cheaper' price you pay for the eXtendia version compared to the GData one is because there are no engine updates. When using the AVK Pro from eXtendia you can ONLY update the malware definitions, NOT the engines. You are stuck with 2 'older' engines but which together have an enormous signature file.

Pity. Without having to read this thread all over again, is there anyone who sells the engine-updatable English version of AVK with KAV/RAV?

PS: I joined the forum as you can see.

    Simple answer is no!

GData did but the latest version of their AVK Pro has RAV replaced by BitDefender.

They therefore gave permission to eXtendia/Boomerang Software to sell/distribute the 'out of date/previous/older' version. No-one therefore sells AVK Pro ( KAV + RAV ) with updatable engines.

For what it is worth: Scanning my harddisks using ExtendiaAVK revealed two trojans.
These were in files that have been on my PC for at least 2 years. One was inside a (never executed) .EXE file (ultimate bootdisk for W98 ), the other was in a .EXE file which was inside a .ZIP file (retrieve password for Eudora if you lose it), which had also never been installed/executed. I changed from Eudora to Pegasus, so had no need (anymore) but kept it just in case.
I sometimes D/L programs that may come in handy if something goes wrong, but more often than not they just sit on my HD.
I previously used paid-for Norton AV 2002, free AVG from Grisoft, free Antivir from B+EDV, trial Sophos, trial NOD32, paid-for F-Secure (which I returned and got refunded, because the Help-function could not be made to work) and Kaspersky V5 Beta (not necessarily in that order).
NONE of the above found these files, so inspite of older engines, hat off to Extendia/AVK.

They each caught one. I deleted both files containing the virus,as I don't need those programs.
    BAT/RBTG.Gen* (RAV)
    Hacktool.DOS.Eudpass (KAV)

A tweek for low spec pc running extendia avk sent out by tom keydel a boomerange customer care consultant today ( he said he is doing a random quality control survey) is as follows
Right click on the eXtendia Antivirus icon in the Windows tray (in lower right corner of windows), select configure, then change File Types to “Only Program Files”, and UNCHECK “check packed files” option.
works well for my win98se 128 ram pc .

I thought Boomerang's customer care consultants were an extinct species :D

Further, for a quality control survey all they need to do is take a look at some of the forum posts!!!! At least it's a start I suppose

SPC have you purchased the single or double- engined AVK?

  16. AVG6 uses from 750KB-3MB averaging ~1.5MB

I just tried this Extendia and I wasn't too impressed. Besides being slow, it seemed to find viruses in a LOT of files including everything in my prefetch folder ( even layout.ini). I couldn't even use google - everytime I hit Search it would pop up telling me search(2) in my cache had a generic VBS virus. This popped up on a lot of other files in my cache as well including index.dat. It also found a virus in some .tmp file in my flashget folder but I couldn't even find a .tmp file in my flashget folder.

Oddly, when i did a manual scan of the same files/directories where the RTS found stuff, nothing was found so it seems to be a problem with the RAV RTS engine.

  17. They're not trojans. They're utilities that have similar features as some trojans but they're not trojans . The Eudora password tool is for people who want to make use of this tool of their own volition. AFAIC, detections like this serve no purpose and are effectively false detections.

Is there a link for a trial of the Pro version?
Also, when you choose Support and choose the FAQ for the Pro version, nothing is there. No forums, I wonder how support for the product is? Don't read that as "I hate this app", read it just the way it is. I do wonder how support is.

Both sites are under construction so there are gaps to fill in. But overall, I think most people would agree that if you purchase the program, support, particularly by email is not a high priority for eXtendia/Boomerang software. Phone support within the States is I believe better.

At least they offer a trial version now, so there has been some improvement.

So download the trial and see whether it suits your machine. Just don't expect much support for this one.

Tech Support seems to be improving, I emailed yesterday with a question regarding sp2 and got a reply several hours later with an apology for the delay. I think they are trying and I know that I have emailed them links from forums where the program is praised but they get hammered for lack of tech support.
My liscence does not expire until next June and I am impressed with the product, but if tech support is not better I will switch to MKS which I am running on my other box where tech support is first rate.
I have to admit I have not had any problems with AVK but I like to know support is there when and if I need it!
