Upon booting, I realise that all my shortcuts on the desktop were aligned vertically to the left of the desktop, in a fixed order.

I tried rearranging them, but upon hitting refresh, it will revert back to the left, vertically, and in a particular fixed section.

Also, upon re-boot, my quicklaunch disappears. So I re-arranged the shortcuts, and activated the quicklaunch, however, when I re-boot, quick launch is gone, and the shortcuts are being rearranged again.

The computer name is re-set too. It seems like the system restarted itself or something.

It's as if 'auto-arrange' is activated, but it's not!

    I'm using Windows XP SP2.

Thanks for reading, I really need help here.

you may want to try a few small steps to determine if restore is working correctly. first do again as you did in your post->then make a restore point->then turn off system restore and turn it back on again and reboot. Does this fix the problem?

    Hi there.

    Thanks again for the response.

I tried to do a system restore with various restore points, but all failed.

It says that system restore has failed, and that no changed have been made.

Disable everything, also their start up with windows, then try.
I rememeber when I used Norton Internet Security, I was facing same problem and I figured out that system restore will not work until I disable all protection + autostart up of all modules, reboot and the do system restore.
After system restore if u find them disabled, u can enable them again.
It worked for me, no harm in trying.
