    Hi tooty,

There's so much there, let's try and clean it up a bit first.

Make sure you have the most recent version of CWShredder v.1.59.01.
Close ALL browsers and any open windows or programs before running CWShredder.
Unzip the program, double-click the CWShredder.exe to open it, then click the *Fix button (not the scan button) and follow the instructions you will receive when the program runs. Reboot if prompted.

Then download the most recent version of Ad-Aware6 build 6.181, install it, and bring it up-todate by clicking on the program's webupdate (the globe icon), then click the "connect" button to download the most recent Reference-file. Follow these instructions for setting up Ad-Aware for a full scan: How To Perform a "Full Scan" with Ad-Aware6.
Do a scan with AdAware, and fix what it finds. Reboot when finished

Finally, do a FULL system scan at one of these on-line scan sites: Free Services

After you have scanned with ALL of the above, post a new hijackthis log here in your next reply and we'll try and clean up the rest.

    Regards,

    snap

    Hi tooty,

In your first log you were running Hijackthis from a permanent folder (which is correct), now you are running it in a temp folder. Please re-download Hijackthis 1.98.0-hotfix. Then create a permanent folder on your C: drive (example: C:\HJT\ ) and unzip HijackThis into it's own folder. HijackThis must run from it's own folder (not the Desktop or Temp folders or zip folder) as it creates backups in the folder it is ran from, so if you should delete something accidently, you'll have those backups to restore from.

Uninstall the following through the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel if there:
    - NewDotNet / QuickSearch(bar)
    - WebSearch Toolbar.Emailplug
    - MyWay
    - My Web Search
(if you see 'Fun Web Products', uninstall that too).

Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to end the running process for 'wintsu.exe' if present.

Make sure you have all files and folders viewable:
How to Show Hidden Files and Folders

Then in HijackThis, place a check beside the following items.
Close ALL browsers and any open programs/windows, except HijackThis, and click *Fix checked:

(This checks for HP Driver updates and will access the net to look for those updates. If your printer is working fine, then this isn't necessary)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe"

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load. Then find and delete the following listed in bold:

    These files:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wintsu.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winproc32.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris Hyman2\Application Data\amee.exe

    These folders:
    C:\Program Files\MyWay
    C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
    C:\Program Files\QuickSearch

    Empty your Temp folders' contents:
C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit -> Select All then Edit -> Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder (do not delete the Temp folder itself)

C:\Documents and Settings\ <user's name>\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit -> Select All then Edit -> Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder (do not delete the Temp folder itself)

Open Internet Explorer - >Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Now click the "Delete Cookies" button and click OK.

While still in safe mode run CWShredder again, then reboot your computer back into normal mode.

I noticed you have two antivirus programs running (Nortons and AVG). It is not recommended to have both running at the same time as there's a risk of the two conflicting with each other. You should have one running resident (always on) and the other turned off and just used for on-demand scans.

Once you have finished the above, please post a new hijackthis in your next reply.

    Regards,

    snap

    Hi tooty,

I'm afraid you are still infected with CWS.

First, can you find this file and upload it for a scan at Kaspersky. Post back what the scan results are please.

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntldr.exe

The above file may be hidden. Make sure you have all files and folders viewable:
Click Start > My Computer >Select the Tools menu >click Folder Options >Select the View Tab.
Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
UN-check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
    Then click Yes.

Run CWShredder (click the *Fix button)

Then run AdAware and Spybot S&D and delete/fix what they find. (Make sure you have brought AdAware and Spybot S&D up-to-date before scanning with them)

    Then clear your Temp folders:
Navigate to to C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Temp\ and select everything in that folder and delete it
Then navigate to the C:\windows\temp\ and delete everything in there too except the following folders, Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History folders (leave those)
And clear your IE cache: open IE --> Tools --> Internet Options --> click on "Delete Files" and put a check in the box for "Off line contents", click OK, then click the "History" button, then click "yes" to clear it, then "OK" to close the Internet Options Panel.

Reboot your computer after the scans.

There is also a newer version of HijackThis. Please download Hijackthis 1.98.1, run a scan with it and post a new log here to be checked. I also must ask that you post a new log as soon as possible as this specific forum (the adware, spyware & hijack cleaning forum) will be closed soon as per this Announcement and I would like to see a final log first if we can.

    Hi tooty,

The Kaspersky scan confirmed my suspicions on the ntldr.exe file.

Could you please zip up a copy of it and email the zipped copy to the following for analysis (also include a link back to this thread, please.)
    pieterATwilderssecurity.org
    submitATdiamondcs.com.au

(Replace the "AT" with @ )
Also send a zipped copy to your antivirus vendors so they can add it for detection.

You can delete the ntldr.exe file located in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder. If it won't let you delete it in normal mode, then delete it in safe mode.

This one is not bad, but it doesn't need to be there.

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [GrpConv] grpconv.exe -o

It will probably be gone after you've rebooted your computer since it is in the "Run Once" line. If it is still there, then you can fix it in Hijackthis, but DO NOT delete the file, just fix the startup of it by putting a check in the box and clicking *Fixed checked:

Your log looks clean now, Tooty. Good work! :D

Now you need to turn off your System Restore, and reboot your computer to purge the old restore points. This will remove any infected files that would have been backed up in there: System Restore Instructions for XP. Remember to re-enable System Restore after the reboot, and set a new Restore Point

Make sure to visit Microsoft's Update Site on a monthly basis to keep your Security Patches and Critical Updates current for XP and IE6.

Also check weekly for updates for both AdAware and Spybot S&D. and here are some steps you can follow to help tighten your security and prevent future infection: Why did I get infected in the first place?

    Regards,

    snap
