Unconfirmed: Google Will Pay Mozilla Almost $300M Per Year in Search Deal ...

Google Will Pay Mozilla Almost $300M Per Year in Search Deal, Besting Microsoft and Yahoo
BTW, this is what allthingsd says about itself: "Because the site is wholly owned by Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, we aim to adhere to the journalistic standards of the best of the mainstream media. But, because it is run autonomously as a small online start-up, we aim to exhibit the fresh thinking and nimbleness of the best of the new media. We want to be first, and sassy, but also well sourced and accurate. We will offer lots of opinion and analysis, but plenty of fact as well. "

MS and Yahoo must have really wanted Firefox. Looks like they're getting serious about their search.

I guess, they should have written 'turns down Bing'...
Not as serious as Google though...:argh:
Based on the $300M/year they paid for Firefox,
    Google
wanted Firefox more than what Microsoft did...:argh:

I really wonder what will finally happen to Firefox,
since it has been on the Cross-mark of these two...

Does that mean Google feels threatened by the potential of Bing?

Hope that this injection of money will make Firefox improves more in 2012 than it improved during 2011... it's behind latest Chrome/IE in some critical areas.

I think Mozilla will get into better shape this coming year. For a while there they were too focused on trying to be like Chrome (so was every other major browser, to be fair) instead of trying harder to beat them. I also think Chrome will hold on to its speed advantage over the rest. Next to security, speed was in mind when Google built the browser. The "Instant" pre-rendering is going to massively help Chrome stay ahead of the speed game, even when Javascript speeds across the browsers are neck and neck (which is already pretty much the case between Chrome and FF).

I personally think Javascript speed from Firefox is fine as it is. What I'm looking for in 2012 is for Mozilla to start making more ground in built-in security, and not relying on extensions to harden it.

I personally think so, yes. Bing is the only true competition for Google at this point. I've heard plenty of "Google doesn't need Mozilla" lately, but I think that 300 million dollar multi-year agreement begs to differ. We also must remember the majority of users never touch things like default search providers or default anything really. Eventually a default Bing would sting, no matter how big Google is at the moment.

Google's entire business revolves around search. Something like Bing could put them under.

Weren't you speculating earlier about Google drastically reducing its financial support for Firefox?

Something about Firefox soon being an endangered species or something ... LMAO! ;)

Yeah, and I still expect it to happen in 3 years.

For now Firefox still holds 1 in 5 users, 20% of the search market. Google and MS are going to pay what they need to, they're more invested in search than ever.

If Firefox can't hold onto that market share... do you really think they'll still be fighting over it?

Now Fx is back on form it is my default. I also use the portable a lot. You gotta have a good back-up though right? ;) So I like Iron for that.

I mean, look what has been happening to SeaMonkey, every upgrade I lose another extension.

I was a diehard SeaMonkey user as well ...

Firefox was always my first diehard love though ... many moons ago. ;)

    I'm just a bit of a browser tart ...

Fortunately for some users, it's still more usable and is available on a variety of non-proprietary platforms.

Anyway, speculation on what is still unconfirmed continues:
    Siegler was quoted here.
