I understand that cloning will not be possible/practical when moving to a new maching (different hardward/drivers etc). But is there a way to use Acronis True Image to make the process easier and faster (other than restoring data-type files). Is there a way to do this so I don't have to reinstall all my software? Thanks.

Not with True Image. There are programs dedicated to moving both programs and data from and old machine to a new one. Aloha Bob is one and LapLink has one among others.

Personally, I wouldn't want to risk screwing up a new machine just to avoid installing programs, but it's up to you. If you decide to try this, be sure to make a True Image full system backup of all partitions on your new system's hard drive so that if things don't work out, you can get back to where you started and simply install the programs.

Thanks for your response - good advice. (Aloha Bob looks a little flaky.)
