Does anyone know what technical data (other than the message itself) is transmitted in and SMS text message?

Lot of info on the Wiki page, and some attack papers in the footnotes. I'd imagine phone number and maybe tower info, but no, I don't know.

If I remember correctly every SMS includes the cell tower ID from where you were when you sent the message, the From and to numbers, and the priority flag (if it's important or not). Except for the tower ID I don't think any other location data is sent out.

EDIT: Also I believe the metadata includes what type of message it is (I.E a Class 0 SMS, WAP Push, etc.)

    Thanks

What I'm most interested in is whether the recipient can tell the ID of handset that sent the message.

Like the IMEI? I don't think so. I don't see any reason this would be in the SMS metadata. The Carrier can pull this on demand plus anytime you connect to the towers it's sent back. It would be pretty redundant to send it as part of the SMS.
