Computer Management says this 500 Gb drive has a Healthy EISA Config, but neither shows Volume Header name, nor any data - Capacity & Free Space are both 465.76 Gb (100% free).

My daughter's Sims2 settings were backup up on this Lacie HDD before reinstalling Vista on the PC, and if nothing else I wish to get back her precious game settings. Lacie are saying "send it back, & we'll just reformat & return - no data saved". Can I get back the data - would MS DOS be able to work?

You might want to try a program like Acronis Disk Director. It can search and recover a partition if it was deleted.

I did this once when I meant to delete the volume of my c: drive prior to an image restore, and I accidently deleted my external drive. It was a 2min exercise with Disk Director.
