When I reboot, which I do every day, sometimes I don't get the clean, grey, Mint display. It's easy enough to swipe clean with another window, but why does it happen and what, if anything, I should do to correct?

The entire screen might be covered with this pattern

or just a border around the icons

I never have strange display issues when I boot to XP.
Laptop has ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000 IGP display adapter.
