Inadvertently Disclosed Digital Certificates Could Allow Spoofing

Executive Summary

Microsoft is aware of unconstrained digital certificates from Dell Inc. for which the private keys were inadvertently disclosed. One of these unconstrained certificates could be used to issue other certificates, impersonate other domains, or sign code. In addition, these certificates could be used to spoof content, perform phishing attacks, or perform man-in-the-middle attacks against Dell customers. This issue affects all supported releases of Microsoft Windows. Microsoft is not currently aware of attacks related to this issue.

To help protect customers from potentially fraudulent use of these unconstrained digital certificates, the certificates have been deemed no longer valid by Dell Inc. and Microsoft is updating the Certificate Trust list (CTL) for all supported releases of Microsoft Windows to remove the trust of these certificates. What we don’t know is exactly what this new update improves because this is actually what users of Windows 10 are interested in in the first place, but Microsoft doesn’t seem to be willing to provide too many details regarding cumulative updates.

Microsoft promised to offer such information to enterprises, but given the absolutely huge amount of feedback coming from consumers as well, the company might very well change this decision and make release information available for everyone sometime in the near future.

In the meantime, users are strongly recommended to get this update running on their PCs as soon as possible because, as usual, it does come with important improvements and bug fixes. And the moment we find out more about what is actually included, we’ll get back to you, so check back for updates should more information be provided by Microsoft.
