It's a fix to a bug in Windows Filtering Platform causing applications employing WFP to lock up the system under certain circumstances. I guess that sooner or later the fix will be distributed to all users via Windows Updates. So far we have not heard that installing it generated new issues. Quite the contrary, several users have reported that the lockup issues vanished after installing the hotfix.

    I'm still a little confused.
How would a user know if he had a program which used the Windows Filtering Platform API, thus may benefit from the hot fix?
Does ESS5 use to so would most ESS users potentially benefit?

Yes, EAV/ESS v4.2 and v5 use Windows Filtering Platform. If one is not sure if they have an application utilizing WFP installed and experience issues on Windows Vista or newer, installing the hotfix can only help, it won't do any harm.

I loaded the hotfix and my system still randomly freezes.

The Microsoft hotfix still needs more work.

From internet searches, it appears random freezing has been a issue since at least 2009.

I was able to stop the freezes by setting ESET SS 5 to default settings.

Changing to default settings did not work for me. Installed 5.2.9 and still have lockup issue. The hot fix post shows to be for Windows Vista not Windows 7. Fix name: fix393635. Did not install because not sure if was the correct fix.

Does anyone have any McAfee product installed also in the systems with the problem?
Also, do you have the link to download the Windows 7 x32 fix?

    Thank you

Does this problem happen at installation, bootup or any time running?

I have just tried installing ESS 5.2.9.1 (64bit) clean on 2 different Windows7 machines, and the install never finishes ... the installer just sits in the (presumably) last bit and waits forever ... no network traffic until I reboot.
Upon reboot, ESS sees the NIC and starts asking if I want "Strict" protection etc.

    Problem appears to be unrelated.
It seems installing with "Interactive" mode selected causes the installer to never exit.

    I now get

"The image validation service is unavailable. Please press the button below to renew the challenge image."

Is it just me or have Microsoft disabled download of this fix now?

    Edit:
Seam to be fixed now so doesn't matter.

    Hi Marcos.

Does this lockup issue also happen on Windows 8 Pro 32 bit?
Should Windows 8 user apply this hotfix?

    Thank you.

    Hi. Not Marcos here, but...

No, the fix is not for Windows 8 - it is for previous Windows versions - Vista , 7, Server 2008 and 2008 R2.
Version 6 is supposed to work better on Windows 8.
