Microsoft purchasing Skype – what could this mean for Linux?

    They already stated they will continue to support current platforms and expand on the platforms it supports (Xbox, WP7, etc) it wouldn't be very successful if they just started ditching support randomly.

    They don't have to drop support, they just have to turn a blind eye to Skype for Linux continuing to languish in its state of semi-abandonware.

    This is really bad news, since Skype is the only reliable cross-platform video/audio chat protocol I can use in Linux. Anyone know any alternatives?

    Let's wait and see ... there are other clients, y'know.
    Best of all, this is a great opportunity to ditch some less popular friends.

    It's really pathetic reading all the posts in that link, is OMGubuntu holding the 2011 Whining conference? Skype's support for Linux wasn't all that great, we shall see what Microsoft will do with it. Bear in mind that the Linux community is very small compared to the Windows and OSX, it's all about priority I'm afraid.
