I got this free with a motherboard a while ago.

Still using it today, uses current engine and dats...

I get about 1 virus a month, plus the usual widespread viruses, via email, Mcafee 5.1 always picks them up.

    Not one problem.

Have av software improved much in the past few years
    ?
I was wondering how my Mcafee 5.1 would compare to todays current av software, as at the moment I dont feel the need to upgrade.

In terms of virus detection there is no difference between McAfee 5.1 and the latest versions (is 8 already out?). You just have to make sure that you are using always the latest scanengine (superdat) because this is the important component.

In later version then 5.1 you have some additional features (which are not that important) and an updated GUI.
