The right settings depend on whether or not you want to use pop or IMAP. If you are planning on reading your email from different computers/devices choose IMAP. You can look it up on Wikepedia to see the difference between the two. In general, pop usually only checks your inbox, with IMAP you can see all folders. This is an oversimplification, of course.

I wonder if your Hotmail contacts will synchronize. I have doubts. I know the calendar won't work unless you're using Windows Live Mail or Outlook as an email client.

Sorry, they way you worded it it sounded like you didn't know the difference.

Here's what I have for Hotmail IMAP settings:

    Incoming (IMAP) Server

    Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com
    Port: 993
    Encrypted Connection: SSL

    Outgoing (SMTP) Server

    Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)
    Authentication: Yes
    Encrypted Connection: TLS

    User name: Your email address
    Password: Your password

The only thing that looks different from CNet is Authentication.

Just out of curiosity, do you have some compelling need to use Thunderbird for Hotmail? You most likely won't have the contacts synchronization and you won't be able to use the calendar. I opened Hotmail in IE, which I otherwise never use, and dragged the Hotmail tab into the taskbar. All I have to do is click this icon or Windows key + number of the icon on the taskbar and it opens up almost like an email client. Works great and you have features in the webmail interface that you won't have on a desktop email client, like the clean-up feature for newsletters, sending emails with aliases or accounts that Hotmail picks up for you. Just food for thought.

Moontan, do the contacts sync as well? My suspicion is probably not, but I might be mistaken. I know that you can't get the calendar to work in anything but WLM or Outlook w/Hotmail connector.

    no.
i don't see a Contact folder in Thunderbird.

i use TreeDBNotes Pro to handle my contacts anyway, so that doesn't bother me much.

there might be ways to do it though.
    i don't know.

a Google search did not yield positive results.
maybe the official Thunderbird forum might help.

you have to go into the Hotmail/Outlook.com settings and tell it to stop using pop folders.

probably all your mail is in the pop folder.

use this for IMAP server settings:

    Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com
    Port: 993
    Encrypted Connection: SSL/TLS

i would recommend you back-up your emails before you start playing apprentice wizard. ;)

That's what I suspected. I think the contacts and calendar run with this DeltaSync protocol, or whatever it's called. Thanks for your reply.

Someone here at Wilders posted it in the thread about Outlook.com now having IMAP.

I haven't used IE in ages either except for Hotmail.

BTW, I am more "sfaticato" than you are. I haven't installed anything, just dragged a tab into the taskbar. :D You should try that out. If you don't like it, just unpin it from the taskbar and it's toast.

In theory that's what you should see. One question: have you used Thunderbird to pick up Hotmail with the pop settings? If so, that could be the problem. See this guide. That may or may not help.

I see in another thread that you are having trouble with Eset and the mail scanning thingie. Maybe that is screwing something up?? Might be worth a try if you disable that and then try your IMAP.

You said you use Thunderbird because you are lazy. I said I am more sfaticato because I haven't installed anything, just dragged an IE tab to the taskbar. You really should try that out. It takes about 30 seconds to do. I still use Firefox as a browser and the Hotmail tab in the taskbar is just for email. It even shows the number of new emails on the icon.
