We (husband and I) know very little about computers, etal.

#1- Wonder if you could explain what you mean by "I am using this on demand and SAS real time?"
#2- Is the malwarebytes a FREE program?

(We are senior citizens and cannot afford to purchase programs and that is why we were using (and liked) the AVG-AS free edition 7.5, which is being discontinued. We were also using AdAware 6, but that too has been discontinued and the new version does not work on our notebook. We do use SpywareBlaster.)

#1 - He means that he is using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) as an on-demand scanner and using SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) for protection from threats in real time (as they occur).

#2 - MBAM and SAS are both free unless you want the real-time protection.

    edit - added links

Thank you. Would you be able to tell me what is the difference between an Anti-Spyware program and an Anti-Malware program? What is spyware and malware? Are they both the same?

Although SAS uses the term antispyware in it's name and MBAM uses the term anti-malware, they both detect various forms of threats. So I wouldn't get to hung up on the definitions of the words.

But basically, malware is a term used for any malicious program. Spyware is a type of malware designed to collect information from a user without their knowledge.

Thanks. I got this answer back from Malwarebytes and wonder what it means...
"Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a free on demand scanner. To protect your computer you need to purchase the full version."

The 2nd sentence confuses me. "To protect your computer you need to purchase the full version." If we do not purchase the full program, what protection are we offered?

The reply from MBAM means the same thing as I did when I stated, "MBAM and SAS are both free unless you want the real-time protection".

The free version can be used as an "on-demand" scanner to search for and remove malware which may have already made it onto your computer. If you want the additional protection from malware gaining access to your system in the first place you must purchase the full version of the program.

I hope this clears up your confusion. :)

Another great program is Spywareblaster you don't have to run it all you do is check for udates and enable the protection. :) Spyware Terminator is another great free program that has a real time shield.

    Re: AVG-AS 7.5.1.43

Just for your clarity as newcomers to these terms:

#1 'On demand' describes the way in which the anti virus/malware runs. Rather than running silently in the background and monitoring all the activity in "real-time" like the typical anti-virus does ('fire and forget'), these applications will run when you demand that they do a scan.
#2 Malwarebytes anti-malware is a free on demand scanner.

Have a look at both Avira Anti-vir Personal Classic
    http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html
or AVAST Home Edition anti-virus programs
    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
they are both free and run in realtime and are as good as AVG..

I would also download a program called Threatfire to compliment your anti-virus if you have a fairly new laptop:
Threatfire is FREE and runs in realtime also:
    http://www.threatfire.com/download/

    Anti-virus program ratings:
    1. Independent quarterly reviews of paid vs free anti-virus programs:

    also

I have put a list together with more info at moneysavingexpert.com:

    Hope that helps

    AlizeZ,

Hi! First off, are you running an anti-virus program? If not, you need to get one immediately. AVG, Avast and Avira all have free anti-virus programs that provide "real-time" protection. "Real-time" protection means active full time protection scanning things in "real time". AVG anti-virus is the easiest, Avast is the most complete with anti-spyware capabilities and Avira has the highest detection rates.

There are many "On-demand" anti-spyware/anti-malware type programs. "On-Demand" means that they can only scan and remove malware they find and offer no "real-time", active protection. If you want that, you usually have to pay. SuperAntiSpyware, MBAM and A-squared are all pretty good. Some even offer lifetime licenses for the "full" versions as low as $19.95.

Also, if you were using AVG-AS free, it wasn't protecting you in real-time. It was just able to do on-demand scans.

    I hope this helps :).
