I Macrium backup to two internal drives. A SSD and a 500gb USB drive that is connected to a USB port on my motherboard. I had it lying around when I built this so I figured I'd use it that way. My scheduled backup (7:00AM) to the SSD ran normally. Macrium reported errors for the 7:05 to the USB drive. I checked the log and I paraphrase: "cannot locate the drive!" Then I tried it manually with the same result. I checked "This PC" and sure enough it wasn't listed. I got out an old 60gb external and used it just so I had two sources in case of failure. On hope, I did a reboot and dang, there it was as normal as ever and worked fine.
Now yesterday I did update the INTEL Update Utility and subsequently updated the INTEL graphics, both of which required reboots so it wasn't like it had something to do with failing to reboot.
One thing I was going to try was to restore yesterdays images. I have no idea if that would have rectified things since I didn't have to go there. The experience did affirm the usefulness of more than one backup destination! Thank you!

It sounds like all was well once you did a reBOOT following the weirdness... yes?
