    I am looking for a simple to use and set-up file versioning app, free is preferable but not essential.

    I want to be able to keep versions of files I am working on, while I am working on them. The versions should be created each time the project is saved and must be able to be versioned while the file is still in use.

    Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    Try Active Backup http://www.ajcsoft.com/active-backup.htm

    Not free, but not expensive. Works well and there is excellent support.

    You could try SyncBack I have the Pro version but I'm quite sure also the free one does versioning - it's a very good program for backup/syncing.
