    Hi all

can anyone recommend RestoreIT by Farstone? I am looking for a snapshot solution and Rollback Rx doesn't work on my PC. Rollback crashed during installation. FD-ISR won't install either.

    What are your experiences?

    Thanks.

Can you tell us abit more about your set up?
I'd be surprised if both Rollback and FD-ISR would not install/ crashed unless there was something unusual, particularly in your MBR.
Do you use a multiboot loader e.g. OS Selector by Acronis or its like?
    Are you using WinXP?
    etc.etc.

Restore It is pretty good (not as good as RollbackRx or FD-ISR IMHO) but you will probably find the same problems installing it if both the above didn't work and that needs to be resolved first.

    Hi Lee

    Thank you for your response.

I have three partitions one FAT 16 and two NTFS. My OS is Win 2000 SP4 with Acronis True Image 9.0 installed. So nothing unusual in my opinion.

By the way RestoreIT installed flawlessly, had to uninstall ATI beforehand. Disk cloning went well as well. Have just to test incremental backups.

    By now RestoreIT delivers.

    Frank

    My security setup:

    SSM 2.2.0.591
    Outpost Pro 4.0
    Dr. Web 4.33.1

I used Restore IT for about 2 months. It was excellent to begin with and I made many rollback restores as well as full image backups and occasional full restore with it. However, after a few weeks my system started to slowdown for some reason and my hard drive was getting an absolute hammering at startup, and coming out of standby or hibernation. I thought it may have been prevx1 so uninstalled that but to no avail. I tried a few other things but again to no effect. I uninstalled Restoreit and lo and behold, things were back to normal. I have no explanation as to why this happened.

Again, in the beginning I was very happy with it - and if it wasn't for the problems described above, I would have stuck with it.

You can pick up a copy from Vnunet for about $30US ($40AUS).

FirstDefense-ISR works only for your system partition, where Windows and FDISR is installed.

System requirements for FirstDefense-ISR are :

    * Intel/Intel Compatible processor
    * 128 MB RAM
    * 5 MB Disk Space (Additional space required for each snapshot taken - space required is determined by program configuration. Maximum required for each snapshot is used space of system partition. Non-system partitions/removable media can not be used to store snapshots.)
    * NTFS file system. FAT16/FAT32 is not supported
    * Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home/Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003
    * Support for English language versions of Windows only (this might be improved in the latest version, I'm not sure)

If you have all that FDISR shouldn't be a problem, unless your total system doesn't like FDISR and that happens too sometimes.

Thanks to all for contributing to this thread.

Meanwhile I restored an incremental backup and my disks were a bit fragmented:( . Thus I had to run PerfectDisk to defragment them.

I have been using RestoreIT for a long time.
It keeps track of changes of the disk on sector base (not file base) and when you defrag it might run out of it's backup space and then RestoreIT will delete without warning your incremental snapshots.

    Hi Wilbert

I thought RestoreIT's partitions would be transparent to PerfectDisk's engine.
Moreover I have noticed a slowdown in browsing speed with Opera.

When I tried the RestoreIT trial earlier this year, it detected that I had Acronis True Image on my system and refused to install until I removed ATI. That was a deal breaker for me.

    A Follow up.

Uninstalled restoreit because some restored backups got corrupted. BSOD's along the way. Now I am concentrating on the installation of Rollback Rx. I am working with Eric Sun of Horizon DataSys on a solution for my system.

    Hm,
Rollback RX crashed, FD-ISR doesn't install, RestoreIT results with defects.
Something is wrong here that has nothing to do with all this software.

Restore it works like FDISR or EAZ-FIX?
I wanted to try this but I saw it was a large download for dial up so just gave up.

My experience with RestoreIt was that every incremental backup I made increased in size until the next one was created. It was as if it was being added to, and I didn't like this approach nor understood the need for it.

No, I would compare it with the concept of Goback. Or the ultimate System Restore.
    Who called RestorIT snapshot software?

No. Both are very different programs and they don't work in the same way.

With FD-ISR the snapshots are akin to having two or more partitions on your hard drive.

RestoreIt can create full backups of your system or incremental backups.

My interest doesn't go that far, I have already a good solution. I'm just looking for other snapshot solutions. If you don't know any other software names anymore it's OK. Maybe other members might know other snapshot solutions than FDISR, RB, EF. I only need names, not a full explanation.

There are memebers here who use multiple software and i get much better understanding by their comaprison and contast between similar products.
Secondly I am jsut too lazzy to read a lot of stuff online and feel much comfortable with short comments by users here.:)
