I'm switching over from windows 7 to linux mint 10 now.
I can play my windows games easily using Wine :D

EDIT: whenever I press alt+right click on any window (including my game window) a menu for minimize/maximise etc pop-ups :<
how can I disable that behavior? its annoying >_<

I also need advice to improve linux security

    What is apparmor? :)

is there a ccleaner-like program for linux?

Linux Mint is not only a great os but a work of art.
I'd love the mint team to develop different types of mint besides ubuntu/debian but that costs time and effort.

If Linux ever corrects its audio problems and flash issues then it will nearly be perfect for anyone to use. Linux is no longer intimidating as it was back in the 90's when you really had to know what you were doing. Brand new linux users are jumping in head first.

    A wise decision. :)

Congratulations - but be prepared that newer games probably won't work in Wine.

It's not really necessary but it doesn't hurt either. However, you should read up on it first. As Mint is an Ubuntu derivative you should look here, here and here. In order to enable all profiles execute

    sudo aa-enforce /etc/apparmor.d/*

Computer Janitor - although not really needed. Just open Synaptic, click "Status" and chose "Residual config". Mark the packages there for complete removal.

    Read http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-security-anti-virus.html and http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-security-real.html

    Read http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-1c91cac836dd52754c846d2ef62be4f346eebe87

Ubuntu/Mint has no open ports by default. But if you prefer to have the FW enabled just execute:

    sudo ufw enable
    sudo ufw default deny

dont switch to linux completely but i rather advice you to have a dual boot with windows 7 if you already got that or paid for it :p

    which linux distro to chose

    linux mint

    pclinux os

are the among which are very easy to use and out of box (ie flash vlc......etc already installed)

security apparmor is there in linux mint

pclinux it got its own Mandriva Linux security settings

    http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/pclinuxos-2010.html

    both linux are very good

    for ccleaner type tool

you can use bleachbit which is pre-install in both

as fast as antivirus you really dont need them but if you want to scan your windows files with them you can use avast and bitdefender or both :D

also there is gui tool for firewall in mint guwf where you can set your firewall

    default security is enough

just disable samba service and ports from firewall if you dont use them in linux

    they are open by default

Thank you very much, Mrk, for your efforts and time to share your user experience with us.
I opted to install the Debian Testing based release, really great!

I can vouch for mint being excellent :) My 12 yr old daughter said to me earlier, "you've got some nerdy Linux thing running on your computer. I can't print my homework document". So I checked it was typed on MS Word 2010, ".docx" extension, opened it with oo, asked her to check to see if it looked right, she confirmed it was perfect, then printed it for her. I said, "not bad, even for nerdy Linux, hey" She shrugs her shoulders and walks away :D

    Hey all
Sorry to ask here but I didn't want to start a whole thread for an easy question. In mint how do you get the close app X to the other side of the window? I'm so used to it being on the right side

On Mint 10, I have the 'X' on the right already and the downward-arrow-head Window Menu on the left...

    ClamAV
    Firestarter

TBO, I have no experience whatsoever with neither one. I've been using LM with out-of-the-box settings.

    Not needed - see http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-security.html

Firestarter is not a firewall but a GUI to manage the built-in iptables. It's good, but you have to know what you're doing. For the vast majority of users the two commands mentioned in posting #31 above is more than enough.
